100K Populaire, Saturday March 17th

Details on the Bike-PGH calendar, or at the Pittsburgh Randos site.

Registration opens at 7 AM at the Oval, ride starts promptly at 8. 65-ish miles through the North Hills.

Dan G. and I pre-rode the route last weekend...even after a couple of "have mercy!" changes, suffice it to say that this is a hilly ride. Should be fun, though

I hope I have no mechanical issues or flats on this ride

I plan on being there. please say hi if we've never met. I'm the guy on the green trek 520 with albatross bars, a beard, and unshaved legs.

More info from Jim:

100 km Populaire – making the paperwork painless for all:

1. I ask all that are riding to sign and bring the event waiver on page 3 of the brevet series registration form. http://www.jameslogan.me/pittsburghrandonneurs/files/Download/2012-BrevetSeries-RegistrationForm.pdf.

2. Since we aren’t doing advance sign-in, I’ll have a separate emergency contact list I’ll ask you to provide information for at the start.

3. Please print out your cue sheet copy(s) at home. I will have a few for those that don’t have them.

4. I encourage all to join the Western PA Wheelmen. It is optional for our Populaires, but required for the longer brevets with cash fees. Get it over with now. To do so, complete the first two pages of the brevet series registration form, and bring payment of $17. http://www.jameslogan.me/pittsburghrandonneurs/files/Download/2012-BrevetSeries-RegistrationForm.pdf.

5. We will use brevet cards for the Populaire. Please put your complete address and contact info on your card. I am not an organized person.

6. At the end of the ride, please sign your card on the back and put your arrival time in the appropriate place.

7. We are all adults. If any WPW member wants to ride the informally, that is ok. I will have a WPW sign-in sheet as well. I encouraged experienced randonneurs to carry brevet cards to demonstrate their use.

8. For more information, see www.pittsburghrandonneurs.com

so thanks to dan for hanging with me for the first part of it, and thanks to those i finished with, and thanks to jim and everyone else involved in organizing this. i need to eat more often and pace myself at the beginning of long rides, but now i know! what a great morning. it was nice meeting more of the message board people.

now i eat pizza.

edit: you know it was a good ride when you can feel a thick film of salt on your face and neck.

Just curious to see if anyone wants to share how many calories they burned (if you happened to be using some soft or device that monitors those kinds of things). I believe it varies by weight, but I am still interested in data if someone is interested in sharing.

The estimates of calories burned based on HR always seem incredibly high to me. Power based estimations are very close to reality. FYI.

It does vary by weight since you're looking at the ratio of watts to kilograms over time. If two people do the exact same ride shoulder to shoulder the bigger person will have burned more calories.

I always wonder if rough estimates for calories burned based solely on weight and average speed mean you should include the bike's weight or just yourself.

chemicaldave

I imagine there's so much slop in that sort of estimate that it doesn't matter.

mayhew

That was hella good fun...thanks to all who came out, and thanks to Jim for organizing.

Just FYI, the spring 200K is in two weeks...start in Shaler, head west to Avella, then north through Hookstown and Shippingsport to Midland, east to Rochester then northeast to Zelie and back to town via North Park. The last time we offered this route, the high temp for the day was 34 degrees, and everyone still finished...I suspect this year will be a little more temperate.

my dad works at that power plant. looks like i will have a good route to get to my parent's house in the future.

stefb

@stefb, I have a power meter and it says I burned 2600.

Awesome ride today. And, total bonus, ZERO turkeys.

@Sarah_q How long did the ride take you? Garmin or Powertap head? If Garmin is it set to display calories or KJ?

Thanks.

mayhew

5:27 rolling. A powertap sends the info to my Garmin 800.

The unit on the Garmin just says "C" so I assume that's how we usually think of "calories" on labels which I believe are technically kilocalories but conventionally we all just say calories. But honestly I never gave it that much thought.

Also I am a "big girl", 5'9, ~175 lbs.

Fairly OT, but is there such a thing as a Powertap disk hub in 130mm? I see they have an MTB disk hub, but cursory inspection revealed no 130mm stuff with disk.

reddan
2012-03-18 13:43:28

@Sarah 1) Sorry. I'm used to hanging out on the Slowtwitch of wattage forums, I apologize for the tone.

That said, C is actually Garmin's estimate of calories, not actual KJ which is joules x time and comes straight from your Powertap hub. Happy to talk about it more but otherwise I'll leave it alone.

@Dan Dunno. It'd be worth asking. I wonder if you can convert the MTB hub to road spacing?

mayhew
2012-03-18 19:25:55

you mean to tell me your fancy new bent's spacing is 130mm?

dmtroyer
2012-03-18 19:28:46

The Metabikes can take either 130 or 135mm OLDs. 130mm is more handy-ier, but a 130 disc hub is oddball. But Peter White had them in stock (miraculously).

@Chris, there was nothing wrong with your tone, or else I spend too much time on Slowtwitch myself.

Are you telling me that Garmin defines calories differently than the nutrition label say on the back of a can or something???? I'm curious now.

sarah_q
2012-03-19 01:23:02

Not quite. I'm saying "calories" on a Garmin is some estimate based on several factors. What they call KJ is a straight measurement. Page 31 of the manual.

mayhew
2012-03-19 01:30:56

For instance, a guy posted a screenshot of his 500 yesterday on Twitter. I ran the numbers and his "calories" were half of what his KJs were.

mayhew
2012-03-19 01:33:56

Yeah I know Garmin has their own algorithm. Without a power meter it reads 2x what it reads with one on avg .

I guess the reason why I weigh 25 more pounds than most other roadies my height is I never paid too much attention to this. lol
