5 cyclists

Today at S. Millvale and Liberty there were 5 of us on bikes crossing the intersection in various directions. Yeh, more bikes than cars!

I am always amazed at how many cyclists there are here in Pittsburgh despite the hills. In Syracuse if I saw 4 other cyclists off campus in a week that was a lot.

That moment made my commute.

yeah, sometimes i forget that once evening hits, there are times, even on the major roads, that there are more bikes than cars going by.

i was hoping this thread was proposing a bike ride to five guys.

this is the second thread you've brought up 5 guys, i think you have a problem...

i'd be up for a ride there, although the ride back would probably kill me. maybe i'd get the burger and ride up to the top of sq. hill *then* eat it.

In Oakland, on Bouquet between 5th and Forbes.

dwillen
2010-10-15 11:29:50

Also in Waterworks Mall

There's 5 guys in Oakland, at the Waterworks, and at the Mills. Not sure where else.

They make french fries correctly.

I only knew about the exurban ones, so, one in oakland, that's good to know.

edmonds59

the one in Oakland is right next to the O. Them's fightin' words

Aspinwall is exurban? I'm confused.

cburch
2010-10-15 13:38:11

Ok, sub-urban.

edmonds59
2010-10-15 13:43:33

Waterworks is actually City of Pittsburgh.

Aspinwall ends at Delafield Road.

(Weird municipal boundaries over here.)

That's the section of Lincoln/Lemington/Larimer that extends across the river.....

Weird municipal boundaries over here.

It's so that the city of Pittsburgh's Waterworks--the actual ones where the take the water out of the Allegheny--are inside the city limits. They kind of surround parts of the mall.

The area where the mall and St. Margrets Hospital sit used to be some sort of 19th-century drain field for the waterworks. Whenever the technology advanced and made that system unnecessary, they pushed the whole deal onto the site where it is today (except for those concrete ponds and some odd buildings between the mall and Rt. 28).

Mmm 5 Guys. I discovered them in a small town in Virginia while on a trip. I had just grabbed takeout and didn't notice they were a chain. About 6 months later I started to see them popping up here.

I love it when there are a bunch of other cyclists riding. Doesn't happen to me much unless I happen into Oakland. I'm hoping for the bike wave to keep heading my way. I did see another bike locked up outside my Giant Eagle the other day, which was a first for me so that's a good sign.

Besides Go-Go and Henry Rollins, Five Guys is the best thing to come out of DC.

noah-mustion
2010-10-15 19:49:34

ok, I thought you guys were talking about the musical (which I first saw in DC) called "Five Guys Named Moe". I didn't remember any food at the musical, but I suspect it's instead a place to purchase food.

If this thread doesn't stop soon, I'm gonna have to get me a burger and fries.

Mmm, keep it going, yeah.

In my fantasy world, 5 guys would also serve beer.

Five Guys Named Moe is a jazz band.

Check them out if you can; jump blues. Front man Jimmy Sapienza also does Louis Prima and Frank, as well as original material.

Tour de French Fries?

One of the guys in Five Guys Named Moe is blind. I ran into him at the Fifth/Wood bus stop one time, back when I was reading the health show to the blind every week. All I said was "This next one is a 61B Braddock" and he said "Thank you, Stu Strickland!" I was boarding the same bus and we had a wonderful conversation out to Pitt.

stuinmccandless
2010-10-16 17:48:42

we should have a tour de hoagie - but it would only go to peppi's in the strip.

rubberfactory
2010-10-17 01:03:21

...and Pickles on Northside and obviously Spak in Garfield...

noah-mustion
2010-10-17 04:29:55

ew. don't go to pickles. my old landlord owns that shop, and if he treats it like he treats the apartments he owns, it's full of bugs and mice, and falling into disrepair. Plus, I've never seen any of the women who work in the kitchen even tie their hair back, let alone wear a hat.

rubberfactory
2010-10-17 12:51:58

Peppi's on the north side, in the strip, in Point Breeze. Can't do a tour du hoagie without Triangle in Swissvale, though.

jz
2010-10-17 13:17:47

don't forget smithfield st!

rubberfactory

noah-mustion
2010-10-17 13:52:52

@JZ agreed. this tour has to begin or end with a Battleship! bring your Ute's

sloaps
2010-10-17 14:08:58

@Noah: eh, maybe I'm more sensitive to the issue becuase I've had to take several rigorous sanitation classes, and worked in places that DID take the time and effort to keep the place clean and up to code, and I hate to see places be so disgusting and still in business.

rubberfactory
2010-10-17 14:19:31

i was grossed out first time i walked in there. but the hoagie was so delicious. the loogies and ratshit really help I'm sure... :P

noah-mustion
2010-10-17 14:29:44

extra protein, it's good for you, ya know?

rubberfactory
2010-10-17 14:34:06

Pickles: I was there once, wasn't really impressed with the place. I was looking for someplace to plug in my laptop while I caught a quick bite. IIRC there's one plug in all of the downstairs area & it's not grounded, and the restroom left much to be desired. It seemed the whole place was going to collapse on me, but maybe half the buildings in Pittsburgh are like that, all built 120 years ago, with 120 years of acid rain eroding the mortar from the bricks. I can't speak to rodents or other critters, but the vision of the cig is enough to convince me not to return anytime soon.

stuinmccandless
2010-10-17 16:00:02

Hair, bugs, rodents, cig ash... Just like mom used to make! Ok mom didn't smoke, but....
