Any interest in riding to a Pirates game?

I know that they aren't the best and may continue to lose a lot, but I like baseball and want to go to a game this year. There are a few options - $9 bleacher seats (although the scoreboard would be behind those seats), all you can eat seats for I don't know how much (doesn't include beer and doesn't have a ton of veggie options), or cheap(ish) seats for $17-20 along the first base side. I would also like to go to dinner beforehand and make a short or longish ride out of it. I have not yet been to places like burgatory or brgr. Any takers? Any preference of day or night game?

burgatory is a huge pain in the butt.

(this message comes from someone who makes their buns.)

I've never been there, but I hear that they're kind of expensive.

NOLA just opened in market square, and it's a tiny bit pricy, but to get a bunch of appetizers probably wouldn't be too much!

Wait is there lard in those buns?

I've been to Burgatory a couple times because I work at a bank down the street. I love it, but it is kind of pricey, like $20 for a burger and shake. Never been to BRGR but I've heard good things. I'd also be down for a dinner/and ball game night though, that sounds like a blast.

I've always thought it would be cool to ride to a Pirates game, but when I think about it honestly, I just can't feign enough interest in baseball to actually sit through a game, even for a biking event. I would go along for a bite and the ride to, though.

Section 301 through 303 ($9) are across the field from the scoreboard and provide an incredible view of the river, the trail, and the city (especially night games).

Post the date if you decide to do it. Unless it is fireworks night or they are playing the Yankees, tickets should be easy to come by.

Please wait for it to be warm out - at least 70's?

I was thinking April 22 but it may be chilly. A game may be more tolerable if lots of friends are in attendance.

When I nail down employment, I'm in.

Yeah it may not be until later in the spring or early summer, when the weather is more likely to be warmer for a night game. Gauging interest here.

Last year I explored a possible "flock to the bucs". Towards the end of the season, I received an offer for cheap tickets, but with short notice, I didn't even mention it. If there is interest, I can see if I can work out a group deal.

I work for the "official (sports medicine) provider of the pirates", so I can also look into discounts

brgr is decent, but somewhat overrated. The onion rings are good, and the veggie burger is actually one of the more flavorful options. I'll gladly eat there on occasion, but I wouldn't wait in line for more than a few minutes.

I rode to a Pirates game once (saw Ian) to meet some friends. I can't say that "the joy of cycling" makes going to a professional sports stadium sufficiently enjoyable for me. If I wouldn't do it walking or driving, biking doesn't make it that much better. If we had a minor league team, I'd be more interested.

i always enjoyed the prospect of getting up on a sunday morning and heading out for a ride, then hitting the afternoon game on the way back. i still enjoy that prospect, even though i've only done it once or twice. so, i'm in. and damned if today wouldn't have been a great option.

I want to show up in sufficient numbers that we cause some contention for locking up bikes, just to make a point. Any idea how many we can tie up now?

stuinmccandless
2011-04-10 16:18:14

Stef - The whole wheat and "brioche" (which is actually not a true brioche) are simply our honey wheat and egg breads. They do use other breads that aren't ours, so I can't say for sure if they're veggie-friendly. So if you get the veggie burger, you'd have to swap out the bun.

I am in, so long as it's not too expensive

I always take a book when I go to a baseball game, which is not very often.

Sometimes I don't read any while I am there.

During the first few BikeFests, we had a Pedal to the Pirates ride. As I recall, we met at Washington's Landing and rode the trail to PNC Park. One year we had a potluck BBQ. I think there were about 10 of us.

The Pirates probably offer group discounts on tickets. Of course, that means that a brave and patient soul would have to keep track of participants, collect money, etc.

I would be interested (in attending, that is, not organizing). I like baseball. I even score the game.

I'd be into it depending on dates.

I like the idea of tailgating on bikes and/or getting burgers somewhere and/or having ice cream at Klavons depending on the route.

pseudacris
2011-04-10 17:20:28

YES KLAVONS! yeah tailgating is another idea. i like it.

stefb

Klavon's = yes.

They do lunch too!

If we kicked in $20 for a real parking space in a real parking lot (or whatever the going rate is), I wonder if they would let us set up one of those temporary bike racks and have a tailgate party there.

stuinmccandless
2011-04-10 18:05:43

i wonder if chrisP would know. he works at the parking garages at least.. he may be able to find out for us.

stefb
2011-04-10 18:14:35

Yeah, we had a blood drive at my office on Friday and they were giving away tickets (actually vouchers I think, i.e. you get to pick the game).

I'd be up for this. I'm not optimistic that they would let us put up any kind of structure in the parking lot, based on my experience at the winter classic. Apparently the canopy we wanted to put up was some kind of "fire hazard" so we had to stand in the rain all day.

Also - good motivation for me to get a trailer :)

wasnt there some todo about them not letting people bring their helmets in, not that it matters much to me but I know there were others who really didnt like the idea of having to leave their helmets locked up with thier bikes.

So, I have an additional idea. The pirates are playing the cleveland indians IN CLEVELAND on the weekend of June 18/19. Anyone interested on maybe driving up to cleveland on that saturday and biking around the city then heading to the 7pm game? Probably still come home that night to avoid hotel costs.

What do you think? I'd be willing to be a driving, and I could fit five (maybe six if you're small and don't mind being squeezed) besides myself (and I have enough bike rack space on roof and hitch)

Just a thought.

smarti6
2011-04-12 17:47:56

Even though I'm from there, I've never ridden a bike in Cleveland. Sounds awesome!

rubberfactory
2011-04-12 18:10:58

Hey, if you do that (the Cleveland thing, which I think is a great idea), connect with these people: http://www.ohiocitycycles.org/ . Would be a great place to park/meet and ride to the game from, and I'm sure would be very helpful for riding places, routes, etc.

impromptu rust belt bike convention?

rubberfactory
2011-04-12 19:21:13

Moved the Cleveland chatter to a new topic!

smarti6
2011-04-12 19:39:59

heh.

So I am not a big fan of baseball - I get bored when I try to play any form of it, let alone sit still and watch it. But on the radio they talked about a guy getting tazed at a game, so I thought maybe this was a sarcastic examination of that event and some unreported bicycle topic related to the tazing.

As I'm reading, waiting for someone to 'don't taze me bro', I'm becoming mostly convinced that riding to a game, when it involves icecream and reading a book if y'all don't oblige with interesting conversation, sitting in the sun, sipping overpriced beer... That actually sounds fun.

I've attended three baseball games. One as a child, it was dumb but we talked the whole time so it was ok. One as an adult, with 6 other really fun people who promptly all sat down with programs and scored the game, providing zero conversation or entertainment. The latest one with a guy who was obsessive over baseball, but it kept raining and flash flooding and clearing up, so the crazy tarp field people provided me with tons of amusement. My fondness for the tarp people circus outlasted my fondness for that particular guy.

So... I'd be up for a ride TO a game, with ice cream and all. No real interest in the game (unless it rains, the tarp circus is fascinating), so I'll bike valet if I can read my book and lounge somewhere comfortable while watching the bikes. Assuming everybody comes back at a decent time for their rides.

@ejwe -- I'm not a baseball fan either, despite my Grandpa's best efforts. (Every year we bet on the World Series -- every time I took the Expos and was disappointed.)

However, with the right amount of fun people, cheap(-ly made but overpriced) food and expensive drinks seeing a game in stadium can be a lot of fun.

I generally find the farm teams more entertaining, I went to several Durham Bulls games when I was down there.

Depending on when this happens, I might be up for it.

2011-04-14 12:12:30

Myddrin - if you've never seen the Washington (Pa) Wild Things, you would enjoy it. In fact, if they had a day game, that might make a nice ride.

edmonds59
2011-04-14 12:38:58

+1 on Wild Things games being more fun than Pirates games (though it's been a while since I've been...).

pseudacris

Damn, i slack on this forum nowadays...Sorry sorry. What am i trying to find out? If we can, rent a few spots for the day? Sans cars?

cpollack
2011-04-14 15:04:49

The Wild Things sounds fun. Not sure I'm up for a 1 day 80-110 mile ride right now.

I have to be by mid-summer, though. I have a century ride in late August.

myddrin
2011-04-14 16:05:31

Hey, it's only 2 - 40 to 55 mile rides. On the same day. That's not bad.

All their Sat and Sun games seem to be in the evenings, so, pfft.

They're sponsored by a pure evil coal company anyway.

edmonds59
2011-04-14 16:31:48

Actually, when you put it that way it doesn't sound too bad... except for the evil coal company and cycling back in the dark (after several beers).

myddrin
2011-04-14 16:58:02

Overnight?

Ride to game. Drink beer, watch game (optional). Go to motel, get drunk, sing songs, sleep. Have breakfast at diner. Ride home.

Sounds good to me.

mick
2011-04-14 17:27:05

Or ride to game. drink beer. go to *some nearby camp site*. get drunk & sing songs around a camp fire, eat roast marshmallows for dinner. ride home after breaky at a diner.

Not sure if *some nearby camp site* exists, but they're more plentiful outside the city than on the North Side (until edwardm franchises, that is ;) )
