Any interest in riding to a Wild Things game?

This came up on the 'Any interest in riding to a Pirates Game' thread.

The basic route is 40-55 miles, so the plan would be to ride, go to game, camp and then ride back in the morning.

There was some talk of finding a campground, beverages and singing*.

Personally, I don't think I'd be able to do this until late June or July. I have a wedding and honeymoon coming up, so time is constrained right now.

---

* For everyone's comfort I promise not to sing. Although I may hum or whistle off key after a few beverages.

i might be interested. i've been telling myself the last few years that i want to do some overnight bike camping trips, and a wild things game seems like a good way to do it.

Cool, its something I've been meaning to do as well. (I should probably get stuff like a tent and sleeping bag at some point...)

Not sure when it will be...other than after 6/10.

Just bumping this one up the top and trying to get a bit more info on dates/camping gear.

I am unavailable/out of town May 27th-6/10 (wedding/honeymoon) and again 7/4th weekend (moving my Mom).

Let's see if the ol tag works here...eta: removed the list because it messing up the rest of the post.

So 6/18 they are playing the 'Windy City Thundercats'

6/25 its the Traverse City Beach Bums

7/9 the Gateway Grizzlies (these are starting to sound all JK Rowling to me)

7/16 Lake Eire Crushers

7/23 Rockford Riverhawks

My thought would be to try and arrive a few hours before the game. That way we can check in to the campground, get some firewood and supplies.

In the morning some kind of breakfast (I'm willing/happy to cook) and then try and get headed back sometime before 9 or so.

That's all I have right now. Anyone have any advice on packable camping gear?

Another bump/follow up.

I'm trying to get my June & July plans in order before I start concentrating on wedding/honeymoon full time.

Right now, I'm penciling in July 9th for the day of the game. I was thinking of meeting up at the end of the Jail Trail (near 2nd and Grant) around 9ish and head to the KOA campground near Washington. According to Google, that should get us there around 1:30. Plenty of time to get the camp set up before heading to the park for a 6:35 start.

Then head back in the morning at some reasonable time.

So far I haven't reserved or purchased anything, so plans are subject to change. Also, although I'll be starting from 2nd & Grant, anyone who wants to meet up along the way just let me know.

That looks good for me. I want to do this.

I must warn you that it is unlikely that I'll ride from 2nd Ave to the camping ground in 4 1/2 hours while loaded with camping equipment.

The ride from Washington to this campground is a decent ride. The campground itself is alright besides from the fact that it's next to the highway and you can hear that in a tent.

@Mick: should we leave earlier?

@tetris_draftsman: Is there a better campground in the area? I just picked it since I know the KOA's are more often than not well maintained.

Also, Kathi is planning a ride for July 10th. Would perhaps the following weekend be a better time?

July 9th would be abeet day for me, but it you schedule the 10th, I can get the 11th off for work.

I don't want to leave earlier - 9 is early for me, I usually don't get to "work" until 10:30. If we start setting up camp before 4:30, we're good for a 6:35 start.

I'm totally OK with travelling alone, if it turns out others are faster than me. If we got a group to go, we might split to faster and slower groups.

I don't know of any other campgrounds That's the only one I could find close to there just giving you a heads up.

Hmmmm, my PTO is stretched thin this year because of the wedding... so I wouldn't be able to take a day off for this.

Is there another weekend that might work better? As I said, I also don't want to conflict w/ Kathi's ride.

Oh! I failed to follow your link and was wondering "Who is Kathi?"

Sure, I could do another weekend. I'm spotty after July 25, but other than that, I'm OK.

Would the 16th work? After that and I'm spotty too until late August.

I'm in touch with the folks at the Wild Things about bike parking. They sound like they are really interested in making it happen. Still shooting for July 16th.

Once I have a little more info, I'll probably put up a new threat & facebook page. Looks like I'll need to have a good idea of the number of people coming.

Just a post wedding followup:

Still planning on this. Likely for the weekend of July 9th.

On my todo list is to contact the stadium, since they are willing to 'help.' (Whatever that means.)

Once I do that, I'll post a new thread here and perhaps an event on facebook.

One thing I'm thinking about changing is the meeting place. Rather than meeting downtown, perhaps meeting on the top of Mt Wash (corner of grandview and wyoming). We have to go that way, and it should give people an idea of what to expect. IIRC, there are 3 cat 5's and one cat 4 on the route.

I against that. There are enough hills getting to Li'l Washington, no need for an extra one. Particularly one with no good "Glide" going back down it that will take you for miles on the downhill.

I'm not exactly sure what a "Cat 5" is. When I've traveled past Washington before, I had to do some hills for sure, but that sounds like more, steeper hills than is necessary.

Um? We have to climb Mt Washington to go to Little Washington? How does that work?

Sorry, my wording was confusing. I meant we need to head in that general direction.

I'm Ok with not meeting on Mt Wash, my primary thought was that it would give people an idea of what it some of the hills we'll hit would be like with their bike weighed down.

That would give people a chance to do things like ask "Can anyone carry my teddybear for me? My pack is too heavy but I can't sleep without her."

Anyway, I may have some bad news, July 9th may not work for me after all. The partner in my side business is going to be running a booth at DefCon and I need to help get everything ready. (This may involve a sprint if there are any python or 3D folks out there.)

Sadly, July 9th is the only time that it looks like our schedules mesh. I should know for sure by the end of this week.

So just bumping this to report that I can't make the originally planned date of the 9th. I'll be helping run a sprint for my side business, and sadly that has to take precedence right now.

(And if anyone out there that might be interested in said sprint, please PM me. )

If someone wants to step up and organize for the weekend of the 9th, feel free. Otherwise, I'll try to come up with some other dates that might work.

Although, I'm pretty tied up through the end of august...visitors, vacation, one century ride and training for a 2nd.
