Apartments near Pitt/CMU

Hey all,

I'm moving to Pgh in the Fall and have been doing research on apartments. I've come to the conclusion that every apartment in the Pitt/CMU vicinity is in poor condition, not maintained, often infested with roaches, and pricey...

Anyone have any suggestions for good apartments or management companies in the area? Perhaps a little farther out from Pitt/CMU with a decent bike commute?

look in bloomfield or friendship. pretty close to pitt, like a 10 minute ride, but cheaper than oakland and much cleaner. plus the added benefit of no college kids

Oakland is the roach gateway to the west. NYC being the East Coast capitol.

Oakland is where they stay when they are traveling out to the plains and beyond.

erok is right about Bloomfield and Friendship. If possible, you should walk around those neighborhoods looking for "for rent" signs.

The nice, cheap places are quite often family-owned and maintained and are not advertised in papers and websites.

You could also consider Garfield, Lawrenceville and Squirrel Hill. You really have to come here to get a feel for the 'hoods.

There are lots of hoods north and west, and even south... Southside Slopes, Mt. Washington where you can rent an entire house for the price of a 1 or 2 bedroom roach motel in Oakland.

Not as convenient if you are doing your day-to-day in Oakland but the hill climbing part of the commute will bust your ass into shape very fast.

The prize money from winning races as a result will make it an even better deal.

I rent a giant house next to Riverview Park for the same price many apartments are in Oakland, and I have my own trails out the backyard going into the park. Can't beat that!

Tuckfelt is another one... I had a barrage of friends who lived in a commune up on Mt. Washington.

We used to call the place "Frank Lloyd Wrong's Fallinghouse."

Hi- Highland Park is nice plus it has easy access to a lot of bicycle friendly stuff.

It's a "step removed" from all the hub-bub, but is quiet and easy ride to anything.

From a self serving standpoint, I have a beautiful victorian, fully renovated in last couple years for very affordable rent and I am an appreciative, active cyclist.

Contact me below if interested.

I second staying away from Tuckfelt. Gary Tuckfelt is a horrible person.

Squirrel Hill has some decent places, but can be pricey. Lawrenceville is fun, but you'll have some steep hills to climb if you are commuting up to the East End every day. Just pray you don't make too many friends who live in Sq. Hill if you life in Lville. Garfield... Never checked out the rentals there. If you wanted, you could probably buy a house in Garfield for about $50k or less.

i second (third?) the bloomfield/friendship area. it's an ideal location. i would also suggest staying away from the j.j. land company as a landlord. and it's not just because i had bad experiences with them; many others have as well.
