Bike around Cleveland and see the Buccos play the Indians

In order to not hijack stefb's other Pirate game thread, I'm going to move my discussion to a new one. Anyway, here is the path I started down:

The pirates are playing the cleveland indians IN CLEVELAND on the weekend of June 18/19. Anyone interested on maybe driving up to cleveland on that saturday and biking around the city then heading to the 7pm game? Probably still come home that night to avoid hotel costs.

What do you think? I'd be willing to be a driving, and I could fit five (maybe six if you're small and don't mind being squeezed) besides myself (and I have enough bike rack space on roof and hitch)

Just a thought.

After a couple of positive responses, I mentioned that I would be willing to coordinate if I get some formal commitments and money for tickets ASAP. I will have to plan my family vacation around this, so I want to be sure it happens. Let me know.

OH SHIT.

That's the day after my Graduation Ceremony. This would be the most awesome thing in the world.

What time would we leave/will there be carpools? (I'm assuming the latter is yes)

i would like to bike TO cleveland. that would be a sweet weekend. leave at like 6, average 10 mph, grab a quick dinner and some beers, head to the jake, head home the next day. that's the way to do it!

i am so glad you called it the jake. :)

I started to say I'm down for biking there, but I was thinking it was 80 miles or so to get there.... just looked at it's 130 miles+ so..... personally, I'd rather drive there and spend the day exploring the city.

I completely forgot they changed the name Noah... I always think of it as the jake. The only time I was there was opening season.... was the 1994 or something like that?

And RF- my guess is leave super early and get home super late.

I didn't even know they changed the name.

But maybe we can ride to the gund arena :)

It's actually not that hard of a ride after 51 turns into 14 it's mostly rolling and flat plus 20 miles of paved trails I found last year, perhaps more I might have missed. This year I'm doing a round trip at least once.

I'm interested in going to the game and pedaling around. Might ride back early Sunday since I haven't tried reversing this ride yet.

Hey - I'm open to anything, but if we're biking up and back, I'm not comfortable being the "ride leader." I'll still coordinate tickets, though.

maybe have a ride group and a car group? I'd like to do this, but definitely wouldn't have time/endurance to ride the way.

I figure we can bounce the idea around through the weekend and try to get a formal answer next week. It's an aggressive timeline, but if I'm ordering tix etc want to finalize soon.

that sounds like a pleasant compromise.

timito! I love that idea. That's what I want to do for sure!!!! Hope others agree

Working on the theory that something is actually going to happen here, I contacted the Indians to address some concerns we've had with PNC Park. Here is their response:

Thank you for your email. Yes we do have bike racks. They are located by Gateway East garage. That is by the Quicken Loans Arena. Also, helmets are permitted into the ballpark. I hope this answers your questions. Please feel free to contact us with any additional questions you may have.

If you go, ride over the Lorain-Carnegie bridge and visit the West Side Market. Maybe ride around the Tremont neighborhood for a minute, you'd be going through it anyways. There is a new a camping area just north of Akron, right on the trail. I've never been there but it's new. Plus, Clevelands Flat!

Also, skip the R-n-R museum and just look at your buddies old Gibson.

If you have more time there's a great trail that runs along the lake east to Bratenhal, which is full of magnificent homes. You know, maybe just skip the game, both teams suck anyways, just ride around.

HA HA. What timito said.

Be sure to check out Ohio City. Maybe check out the bike shop there, Fridrich Bike Shop on Lorain Ave. Tremont's sort of tricky to reach. The trail that runs from downtown to Bratenahl is beautiful. The Lorain Carnegie bridge is a nice view too. Basically, Cleveland is a blast to ride around in.

See, this sounds like fun, minus the game. I'll be in BC that exact weekend, though... I'm really trying to be sad about that, but it's not working. Though I'm totally sold on biking in Ohio being fun and worth joining in on.

any estimate on what time we'd have to meet up/leave? I definitely can't get out of work on a saturday

RubberFactory-

I guess it depends on how many takers we get and what kind of ride people want to have. So far, sounds like you like the idea of going up and biking around, while HiddenVariable and FlyS564 would like to bike up and back. And some don't want to hit up the game at all.

If we can't get at least a small group to do one or the other, I'll probably just drive up for the game with some friends (no biking) and plan a biking-only trip some other time.

But, I'm giving it until next week for people to decide.

okay, cool. I'm budgeting out my tax return and am trying to decide what to do with any leftover money (if I have any, that is)

hey, i didn't necessarily say i was going to DO it, i just think it's a wonderful idea. i may, but if i commit to plans more than a month in advance, my head explodes.

Shawn, I was thinking I might ride back this time around and do a round trip weekend in July. I suppose I'm more interested in exploring Cleveland on bicycle and not so much the game. I lived in Cleveland for 7 years and can't tell you anything about it.

Might want to consider participating in things with these guys: http://www.facebook.com/cranksetrides

Due to lack of interest in actually seeing the Pirates play, I am going to consider this thread dead. If anyone wants to still do the Akron to Cleveland tour day with no game some other time, let's start a new thread.

Thanks, Shawn
