Bike Commuting Tax Credit

Has anybody out there been able to take advantage of the Bicycle Commuting Tax Credit program? Apparently your employer can sign up for this and provide you up to $20 a month as a pre-tax benifit for riding your bike to work.

I contacted CMU they turned me down.

I contacted the CMU Staff council, they didn't want to help.

I contacted the director of CMU HR, he said they would get back to me. That was February.

My employer will buy me a bus pass through paycheck witholding. So it doesn't cost them anything except administrative costs, and I get the tax savings. So if they would do the same thing for this credit, it would be worth about $5 a month to me. Eh.

My employer was looking into it this past winter but I haven't heard anything since. We already get a $20 check per month for exercise related expenses, they will pay $20 towards a gym membership or $20 a month for half of any equipment like a bike or running sneakers so I am happy.

i work at whole foods and was told that it would need to be ok'd nationally an then regionally before it gets to us, if i remember it right. my hr worker thought i was playing a practical joke on her when i first mentioned it, so it was really hard to get her to listen until i sent her a piece from the nytimes on it.

no updates since spring.

I think this thing turned out to be a joke. I didn't hear one word about it from anyone at Pitt. This piece of convoluted illusion for bike riders, but every jerk driving a 1983 GMC Jimmy 'Clunker' gets paid off with a sweet deal on a new hunk of iron easy as pie.
