Bike Miami

I'm moving to Miami soon and was thinking of getting a new bike for the new terrain. I have a Surly Crosscheck and was thinking of getting either a fixie (Steamroller) or a lighter road bike (Trek 1.2 or 1.5). Miami is flat, but has dangerous roads (think Rt 22 in an urban setting) Having not ridden fixed, I was worried about being on a more skill-driven bike on crazier roads. Which choice should I make? Also feel free to comment on the two bikes above.

I have been splitting my time between Miami and Pittsburgh for many years. Biking can be a contact sport but biking here has improved considerably in the last 5 years. There are a few roads that can compare to Rt22 (Monroeville?). It is very flat here. I commute 5 miles daily from Miami Beach to the Arsht Center at 13th and Biscayne. Elevation gain 35'-0" . It is a very pleasant an safe ride across the Venetian Causeway. There are two drawbridges that provide the climb. Depending on where you choose to live here learning to ride a fixed gear will not be a death defying experience. During the last year I have been participating in a Wednesday night ride called the FYXD305 Wednesday Night Ride. Now I am considering a fixie. Riding with this crew has been an [experience and has changed my urban riding style considerably. http://www.themiamibikescene.com/p/group-rides.html Both of the bikes you are considering are nice. Maybe too nice for a commuter in Miami. Bikes disappear here.. FAST. If you have the luxury of having two bikes here I would consider a less expensive fixed gear to hone your skills and learn the landscape. There is always a nice selection of sub $400.00 fixed gear machines on Craig's list. If I make next Wednesday's ride I will put you question to a couple of the riders and forward their comments.

"I have been splitting my time between Miami and Pittsburgh for many years." Have I mentioned that I love this board? LOL Couldn't ask for a better answer than that. If only you were here four years sooner! :p I wonder how the move went...

I've been communicating regularly with the Fort Lauderdale Critical Mass group on Facebook. They have quite a few rides in the Broward area, and share some folks with the Miami contingent.

FLL CM is great. Warm nights, bikes, refreshments.

BTW, that is a great commute. I used to live on FLL beach. Unfortunately, all my commuting (35k mi per yr) was behind a windshield. Forte, it was mostly up and down the beach, to the Keys, etc.

I will look more closely at the date next time! Now I wonder how the move went.
