Bike Rack Map

I had to do some business downtown the other day when it was kind of rainy and was very pleased with myself for knowing that there was a covered bike rack in the portico of the City-County Building that would keep my bike from getting soaked and rusty. I got to thinking that there were surely other covered bike racks, though off the top of my head I couldn't think of any others in that part of downtown.

So I had the idea to make a Google Map of the bike racks, both covered and exposed to the elements. If you'd like to see it, it's here: http://bit.ly/bhQ0Hs

I've set it to be editable by anyone (you may have to have a Google account) and I'd invite you to add your favorite racks and covered parking spaces. Until a good number of people have at it, it will mostly reflect places I go, but I'm happy to have this be a community page.

I'm not convinced that this is going to be all that useful a resource--there are a lot of racks out there, and this will surely leave some out. I don't have consistent nomenclature or great ideas for how to easily indicate a large rack versus only-two-bikes though the covered/exposed racks are indicated by different colors of points.

I don't know what to do in terms of putting other bike amenities on (bike rental, repair shops, parking meters as de facto racks) since I don't want to duplicate the official Bike Pittsburgh map, or reinvent any wheels. If you think they'd be good, I guess put them on, and maybe we'll take them off later.

Your link seems to lead to a map without anything marked on it.

A lot of parking ramps in the city have bike racks in them, and are out of the rain.

I think it's working now. I'll add some of the downtown parking structures.

Nice!

There's also a bunch of exposed racks behind the Casino.

Problem solved -- added a couple downtown.

Added several around Oakland and in other places.

That is a good map. All the racks I could think of were already on it.

I figured the bike rack map thread deserved reviving.

Added a few more, notably the parking garage between Meyran and Semple in Oakland. Also the one near the Field House that I've NEVER seen one parked at, which I can't blame anyone for being at the top of that massive hill.

@impala - you must be a mind reader. I used the map yesterday to go out and take photos of the bikes parked at each location identified in the Golden Triangle. I am calculating the occupancy rates now. They range from empty (vertical racks on Seventh Street and at Smithfield/Allies garage to full to overflowing at other locations. We need more parking downtown!

I took Ian's map, or the mapping exercise that he got going, and greated a summary sheet of downtown bicycle parking options. It will be part of a larger "guide book" that will include photos, etc. For my purposes right now, downtown is defined that area bounded by Ross Street, the Rivers, and Stanwix Street. With all the construction around Market Square and the Point, I had a hard time confirming things west of Stanwix. This is a work in progress. If you have comments, updates, etc., please share them with me, either by responding to this thread, or via PM. (Sending pdf to DWillen for posting....)

Many thanks to Ian for getting this started.
