Bike Trails near Greensburg

Hey guys,

Let me start this off by saying I had a fantastic day today and just had to tell someone (that's you) ended up on the GAP today with a friend of mine and his family and while we only rode 10 miles we had a great time and the weather was just perfect for a ride like this.

On the ride we talked about why we never seem to be able to all get together and go riding even tho we all really enjoy it. we thought about all going after church on sundays and since our church is in Greensburg I am now looking for some bike trails near greensburg that we can get to quickly and easily. (the church is downtown greensburg) Im gonna look myself but if anyone here has some ideas that would even be better.

I hope that this will catch on with others at the church and we can make it a good sized group that goes out riding as long as the weather holds out and starts up again next spring.

Thanks in advance

Dback

We were on the GAP today, too. Probably the best cycling day I've had all season, bar none.

The Five Star trail starts in Lynch Park, practically in downtown Greensburg. Not my favorite trail, but it's convenient for your purposes. There are some riding (trail) options in Murraysville at Twin Lakes Parks as well. Or you could head a little further west to the Hoodlebug, West Penn or Ghost Town trails, generally accessible from the Blairsville area just off Route 22.

The GAP trail is just a short drive from Greensburg - you can pick it up in Sutersville, West Newton, or (sort of a stretch here) Connellsville. West Newton is probably the best balance of convenient / nice / interesting. Connellsville is probably the worst of the three.

We rode the five star trail from lynch park to youngwood depot. 5 miles each way. we had a fantastic ride. 10 miles saturday, 10 miles today. just getting out with my friends and spending time talking and joking and laughing.

Great time. Our church is right by st clair park so this was really close and a lot of fun. thanks for the suggestions. Im sure we will hit the others as well but being so close I can bet this becomes a regular sunday ride.

That being said I realized that the 20 miles i rode this weekend was about 10% of the miles I rode this summer. I had 200 miles on the computer when I started this weekend. (getting run off the road and hurt early in the summer really ruined things)

We thought about the GAP trail but wanted to ride a new trail. As swalfoort said it isnt anything special but any day i get to ride even on a so so trail is better than anyday I don't get to ride.

dback - I ride that trail a lot after work (I work in Greensburg). Also, there is another trail linking Mt.Pleasant and Scottdale that is supposed to eventually connect into youngwood. Looking at a map, it appears that if you start in greensburg and ride the trail to youngwood, you can have a nice ride on some country roads and pick up the other trail in Mt. Pleasant for a much longer round trip.

Up until last month, I rode the Five Star every other day as a workout. If you go beyond Youngwood on the left side of that bridge on Depot Street, you get an extra mile or so going through a picturesque wetland and past WCCC until it ends at the creek in the Armbrust area. Round trip from Lynch Field to there and back is (I think) 14.25 miles. Under an hour on 26-inch wheels is a good workout pace for me.
