I'm partial to:

SE DEUTSCHE FAHRRADFAHRT

UNICORNS UNITE

THE JOY OF SAX RIDE!

I'm also into the idea of Unicycle Basketball. Is this the next bike polo?

Richard (rgyoga) wants to do a yoga ride. Not sure if that's enough or if we need a theme. Like yogis and yuenglings or somesuch.

Namaste Nyan Cats - Too furry?

@Bike-PGH: Thanks for having a much more awesomer website than PDX.

BELLS, BUBBLES & BUBBLERS and PEDAL-BALLOON-ZA both sound like a lot of fun and would be pretty cheap to implement.

Wow, that website doesn't meet my needs for visual clarity or color cordination. My eyes!

I bet Gordon might be able to help in the bubble department. He and a friend had fork mounted bubble wands I believe

Sloaps,

I'm already up on the calendar: "Cycling through Samsara: Yoga, Biking and More Yoga".

At the last volunteer night, there was also semi-serious talk of a falafel ride, which I would be down (and hungry) for.

FOUR naked bike rides? WNBR (bold print, 18th), plus two on the 11th and one on the 13th?

Wow.

undee ride through town! Like the ASU undee run. We come dressed in regular clothes, take off all non-essential coverings and ride through town. All the clothes we were wearing get donated. We could even ride to a place were we can swim after the ride.

I think we may need some more food/ice cream tours!

I had 2 separate dreams last night related to Flock rides.

Dream 1 involved me fitfully and unsuccessfully trying to get ready to get to a Flock ride.

Dream 2 I got to the Flock ride, and the ride included many women in large billowy dresses on Dutch city bikes. Much darn better.

I think this means I need to ride more.

I just got to see the aftermath of Denver's version of Flock. It's called the Cruiser Ride and it attracts 2-3,000 people. It's more bar-focused than Flock for sure, but damn... it gets TONS of people on bikes. Check it out http://www.denvercruisers.com/

Each ride has a theme. The person who picked me up from the bus stop said this about it. "Critical Mass is more about 'fuck you,' the Cruiser Ride is all about 'fuck yeah!'

Oh, and according to insiders they follow all the rules of the road, Flock-style.

scott, very cool! Glad this is a trend taking hold in cities other than our own. I like that they start at 3 separate locations and meet at the "circle of death". Takes a lot of extra volunteers and organization, but for 2k people, you'll need a bunch of extra volunteers anyway.

Kind of scary though having the three starting locations at bars... I worry enough about ending a ride at a bar :)

Denver, le sigh.

Swimming around in my head lately has been the idea of implementing a Pittsburgh Manhunt along the lines of Victoria Manhunt or Vancouver Manhunt. I've never participated, but can't imagine it being anything other than a ridiculous amount of fun (Portlandia did a skit on an adult hide-n-seek league that was hilarious and made me think "ohmygodiwanttodothat", along those lines but outdoors).

This thread is causing those ideas to ferment in the direction of a cycle-oriented Manhunt game... perhaps one would have to stay in physical contact with one's pedalcycle in addition to the standard rules, and an expanded area of play might be possible since wheels are faster than feet.

I'd probably end up with road rash and "out" instantly, but the idea is nice to think about.

Manhunt links that inspired me: http://www.manhunt-vancouver.com/

I'm planning a ride that coincides with the re-opening of The Big Idea (as a cooperative bookstore/cafe), but I don't know where it should go to, aside from ending at the new space....I've never really planned a ride before.

Here's an idea...You could actually make a pretty great ride based on where all the independent bookstores USED to be in Pittsburgh, ending up back at one of the few that still exists. There were some great ones in Oakland, Sq Hill & the South Side before Big Box Bankruptcy moved in.

pseudacris
2011-07-08 03:21:45

that would be cool, I'd have to do a bunch of research...I'll be working on it!

rubberfactory
2011-07-08 03:24:34

There could also be a neat shorter ride of still-existing ones...Copacetic on Polish Hill, Caliban in Oakland, Amesome Books in Garfield, back to Big Idea, or something like that :-).

You could stop at the Robert Burns statue next to Phipps and read a piece, then to the Willa Cather house and read, Gertrude Stein birthplace on the North side, August Wilson, etc. I'll wager there are enough literary sites around here to do a monster ride.

+1 for reading group on wheels ride.....there's so much literary history in da 'burgh, it is a shame that the City doesn't celebrate it more.

I was just about to suggest someone should have a ride down to the Millvale Brew Fest, but the ride back would be a wee bit tricky. Unless someone could somehow manage to wrangle a ton of tandems with designated drivers.

You could just approach and leave from the trail and wouldn't need to mix much with motorized traffic. This would be a very cool ride for BikeFest.

By the way, only 12 days left to get your events in to us!

scott

just saw the calendar... frigging awesome. I love having to choose between doing multiple fantastically fun things. The laundry and dishes piles at home are the only losers in that game :D

I've been trying to do a ride along the following lines for the past couple bikefests, but procrastinated and didn't get it rolling in time, so if anybody's wants to help me make it happen this year, or would like to attend this type of ride, or if there is already one like this happening, lemme know.

Thanks,

Steve

Description

When: Sat July 5 6-8pm Where: Thick Bikes parking lot, 62 S 15th St, Southside Description: Calling all old school steel cruisers for the first annual Steel City Cruise around historic Southside. Starting at Thick Bikes, we will cruise as slow as possible on our two-wheeled steeds, stopping at our leisure, to whet our whistles at various watering holes around Southside, or any other 'hoods the crew feels like rolling through. As the streets get fuzzier, we'll make our way to the trails, finally ending up at either a scenic riverside rendezvous point, or a local row house to reminisce about the good ol' days and sip on some yummy Iron Cities or PBRs. All bikes welcome, but the older and slower, the better."

Nice idea for a ride! Maybe you could team up with these guys?

Steve, what do you need help with in particular? If you submit the event and get it on the calendar people will show up and it will be fun. You can just ask someone who shows up to volunteer to be the sweep if you can't find anyone prior to the ride. The only thing you really need to organize is the route and any stops along the way.

i submitted an event last week but its not on the calendar? halp!?

colin - saw the submission. our intern didn't add the events over the weekend. I noticed tho, it looks like you didn't leave the start/end time for the event. what is it?

so are the kickoff parties fancy dress? I've got a fancy dress I want to wear 'cause it's fun, but don't want to be the only sparkley one.

ejwme
2011-08-02 15:00:14

you know, the event really runs the gamut. there are def people that show up in fancy pants, and some people who look like they just got off of work from messengering all day.

erok
2011-08-02 15:18:08

i'm pretty sure you wont be the only sparkly one.

cburch

Unless I'm at work I like to dress in what some people refer to as "homeless casual".
