Bikes shouldn't (just) be on the road...

I was biking the moonscaped speedway that is Centre Ave. after work today and thought I was doing well. Was riding fast, finding places to let people pass, dodging the patchjobs, not blowing the lights. I pull up to Whole Foods and a lady in an SUV stops beside me in the left lane to tell me in a laughably conversational tone that "You shouldn't be allowed on the road" and about how "Fucked up" that was. I told her I was allowed by law and to contact her congressman if she didn't like it. What I didn't tell her was that I was on my way to Trek to buy yet another 2-wheeler. This time for Frick Park. Unfortunately for her that doesn't mean I'll be retiring my road bike... Still, this has nothing on the Trek dude who regaled me of his encounter with the Iron Grate hatchet man.

Damn SUV women in upscale grocery store parking lots!!! I ran into one of those once, only I was walking. I coughed up some phlegm (disgusting, sure... but one of those things that humans do). Naturally, I spit it out. A minute later, this woman calls me over to her SUV (and I'm thinking she is going to ask me for directions or something). She then lectures me for fifteen minute about how "children and dogs play in this parkinglot." I was so taken back by the whole scenario that I couldn't find any words, except to say "OK then..." and walk away. Anywho, I hope she felt better about her life sitting in her soapbox and telling you all about her ideal world. *head desk*

Hm. Children playing in a parking lot? Nice parenting.

You should have asked her why she's driving an oversized motor vehicle in one then. :)

I have to say I kind of agree about spitting in the parking lot. Not that you deserved a 15 minute lecture, but it is sort of nasty.

It was into a drain, but that's besides the point. I don't dare attempt to compare spitting on asphalt to our right to ride a bicycle on the road... just stating that some people have an air of self-righteousness about their opinions which may or may not go hand in hand with women in SUVs! I wonder if there is any psychological vehicle-empowerment sort of thing at work?

Well, that's completely different. Anyway I'm not so sure about any relationship between vehicle type and asshole type. There's also confirmation bias to consider.

I'm with sarah_q. Dog piss is worse, but seems to be totally accepted. Justice for Drewbacca's loogie!

So where do cigarette butts fall in the dog piss to phlegm scale?

@jona, not saying that a certain personality type buys a certain vehicle type. I'm not trying to turn this into anything but a very general statement in response to the OP. I just wonder if being up high in a vehicle that is built like a tank makes some people more likely to share their opinions with a passer by. It would be hard to objectively test, so I'm not presuming any facts... just throwing it out there. @helen, in a bag or a pocket (or back in the pack from which it came) all seem like acceptable answers to me. Smokers, after all, have control over when, where, and how they smoke. I place it on the very far side of the ewwwwwww don't be gross scale. I put chewing tobacco on the same extreme as opposed to what amounts to the accidental coughing up of phlegm due to respiratory problems. Butts drive me up a wall... I smoked for years and never left trash behind. Glad to say that I haven't even touched a cigarette in well over ten years now.
