Bikes Stolen - CMU Stever Residence Hall

My son, along with a good many of his summer classmates at CMU, had their bikes stolen last night. Seems like someone with a heavy duty cable cutter made off with 2/3 of his Giant mountain bike. Others were not so lucky. They will be contacting campus security, but is there anything else he should do? Is it worth filing a report with city police? I'll try to see if I can find a picture, but it was ~10 yr old, dark blue (with some white highlights), mountain bike with broken handle bar shifter on one side (right side?). Not likely the thief would be riding right away, since it's missing a wheel. Too bad, since he'd really taken to commuting around town on his bike this summer, which was as a regular bike-commuter myself, was really great to see. I guess the only consolation was that it wasn't a newer bike.

By all means report to the city police- or will campus security do so? Posting pix here may help. Any idea how many bikes were taken? This does not sound like the tyrpical kid taking for a joyride if it was multiple bikes. As often is asked, how and where were they locked? I ask as I lock up to the racks on campus frequently and wonder if I need to reconsider where and how I do so.

@helen - u-lock + cable....I think the lesson was learned on why making sure the U-lock is always through some part of the frame is important, though.

@Drewbacca - Thinks for the thread. I called CMU security and they said that they'd not been rounding up bikes. He'll have to file a report on campus, but they took relevant info & S/N. Also asked for me to send them a copy of the photo. They said that since theft was on campus property, they would take responsibility for sharing info with city police.

Bummer to hear about this, Jim, hope you have a bike(s) recovery. It has happened, thanks to this board.

Thanks, Dan. I'd seen where someone got help via the board recently with stolen bike, so we're all keeping fingers crossed.
