i just wanted to start a happy thread today... i spent the last 6 days biking around santa cruz and let me tell you its a dream world over there... couldn't find nicer motorists or better marked roads. i would highly recommend it to anyone.
one word of warning: be careful riding along the ocean, both cars and cyclists get glued to the view and lose track of what they are doing... its a real problem that i saw happen twice in 6 days.

Two years ago, we spent a week or so there, and every day, I commuted from just off the beach up the mountains to Scotts Valley for work (my employer has a small office there). I was glad one of my co-workers had a bike I could borrow. Good stuff.

Yah, places like that are BFCs just on account of the weather alone 
There is some very nice mountain biking right outside Santa Cruz. We routinely drove the 3+ hours to ride there, stay in a lighthouse hostel.. Oh how I miss California
