I see how that car ISN'T on/over the line! Sweet!

It was though - I don't think they'd ever seen a bike lane or knew what one was.

after a few blocks, they caught on, though.

Whoohoo!

I dropped a 311 note to show my support for these. It's easy to do:

Someday I hope that the city will have enough money and sense to stop using paint and start using the embedded plastic (or whatever they are made of) strips which are more permanent.

^ Permanent but very slippery when wet.

I was hoping someone had posted about this! I turned off of my street today (Winebiddle) onto Liberty and was greeeted by bright white lines! I was so excited haha. Even though the first few blocks are comparable to riding on the moon..I'll take it.

Saturday there were "white dots" I was hoping that ment that they were getting ready to paint.

hopefully soon they'll add the word "Bike lane" and repaint the bike outlines that used to be sharrows, just so it's clear what it is (a few cars didn't quite get it, as I mentioned earlier.)

it would be a little bit funny to have a car stencil for the "car lane."

Quit awesome that the one below the bridge intersection approaching Bloomfield has been extended through the lane split. I've never had a huge problem, but it should make things that much asker. Definitely 311'ing.

Bike pgh guys and gals, we're these done purely by the city engineer or was this a case of paying and outside contracted one? The approaches to intersections are much better than some past ones in the city.

Let me bring this conversation back to Pittsburgh level here.

These delivery trucks are protesting the war on cars.

:)

Here are the lanes from the other direction. Nice and wide the whole way. They do a good job of separating the traffic a bit more. I am assuming they will finish the gaps with sharrows where the lanes were too narrow.

New bike lanes in the opposite direction.

I am assuming they will finish the gaps with sharrows where the lanes were too narrow. yep. that's what's supposed to happen. they obviously didn't get the bike symbols in yet. the striping is a bit harder because they have to make sure that there are no cars parked there, so they try to do it on a sunday.

The engineering was done by an outside firm and paid for separately. the line striping was done by the city.

today, there were a ton of cyclists in these lanes, but also, it seemed there were more on the sidewalk.

I saw a man riding the wrong way in a bike lane. A girl heading the right way passed him, and he yelled, "Am I in the wrong lane?" and then switched to the correct side. That was really cool.

"Am I in the wrong lane" File that with If You Have to Ask the Question, You Probably Already Know the Answer.

atleastmykidsloveme
2011-09-21 21:00:43

file that under "Hurry up and put the damn bike symbols in the lanes already"

@erok seriously, at least so motorcycles don't think it is for them.

Start lobbying today.

bradq

I thought I saw above that someone was passed by a motorcycle in the parking lane... So, from right to left: motorcycle lane, bike lane, car lane. Problem solved!

atleastmykidsloveme

Don't forget the middle lane, between the yellow lines. That's the "drive-thru services" lane, reserved for people holding firefighter boots, itinerant window washers, and purveyors of wilted flowers.

reddan

The lanes point out how bad people are at judging the size of the vehicle. Where the car lane narrows drivers are over hanging over the bike lane rather than move over towards the center of the road where there is still plenty of space.

rsprake

this is what the bike lane looked like this morning.

its like that all the way thru bloomfield

Perhaps we should get a group together to do some purposeful crashes, like that gentleman in NYC did with blocked lanes there.

Or perhaps just take the lane the whole way through bloomfield, really slow like.

On a constructive front, it looks like their contact number is 412-255-2493, which goes to the city office for special planning. Wonder if that will go anywhere…

wojty

sharrows work best in that corridor - too narrow for dedicated lanes?

sloaps
2011-09-23 13:17:11

nope. these feel great to ride in.

and Little Italy Days has been around a long time. It's just a weekend

erok
2011-09-23 13:23:24

I wasnt complaining, just letting people know since in my hazy havent woke up yet state I almost rode into it

dbacklover
2011-09-23 13:42:43

Yeah I'm all for community activities that might close a road or a bike lane for a weekend. I think Little Italy Days has been good for the Bloomfield area, and you don't ever want to make a little old Italian lady mad its not pretty.

marvelousm3
2011-09-23 13:57:54

That looks like a nice setup for a bike-thru cannoli booth.

Having come from a whole family of little Italian ladies I know all to well not to poke-a da bear-a

dbacklover
2011-09-23 14:43:24

Yeah...If i eat like i plan on eating in the next few days i don't think i'll be riding too fast through here anyway.Somuchfood on this street.

Oh man, I thought that was next weekend. Doh. And yummy.

wojty
2011-09-23 18:07:21

Go there. Talk to the kind ladies about the new paint job. Talk up the stripes and what they mean and what good it will do. These tents are a good thing; they're taking up what are normally car spaces, replacing them with actual living human beings who are there to converse with.

stuinmccandless

its kinda like a really delicious Park(ing) Day

As usual, nailed it, Stu.

edmonds59
2011-09-23 21:58:34

Im all for it, like I said I wasn't upset, just surprised. I was under the tent I took a picture of before I realized it was there. Flock rode through there last night and it was great, music, lots of people, lots of fun. Just wished we could of stopped long enough to grab a hot sausage sandwich.
