Blvd of the Allies milled

On the way into work today, I found blvd of the allies milled at least from smithfield all the way to the point. I have no idea why this road was picked to be paved. It was in pretty good condition by Pittsburgh standards. Ugh. Sorry, just frustrated that there are worse roads that probably won't be touched. How do they determine which get paved?

I often wonder if major events (marathon, great race, parades, race for cure) don't hold some sway with the city.

There were a lot of little repairs along the edges of that stretch that make riding a cahllenge, which I do both directions 5X a week.

I am trying to figure out how to avoid the milled section going east until they are done. Maybe through PSP and Allegheny Wharf to get to the Jail trail?

@helen I'm sure that is the case. there is all sorts of very recent patch work on the marathon route.

4th Ave. Pavement still crappy, but a predictable devil, if still a devil.

Is it a mayoral election year or something?

Ravenstahl is sort of a goof, but if he got DPW to double their workload for the same pay, kudos to him.

No, last year was the mayoral race. The other reason we get roads paved is a big honking sports event, like the NHL All-Star Game or some such. The G-20 got us a few in 2009. I don't know of any big deal coming up soon, this year.

Stu, was the Boulevard of the Allies in South Oakland repaved in fall of 2009 only in anticipation for the G-20 summit as well? (It was the main route dignitaries arriving from the airport entered Schenley en route to Phipps)

Murray was in a similar state today. Amazingly dusty and made that Murray "door zone" even more precarious. Tho it was nice to see the rougher, lower end of Shady re-surfaced finally.

i was happy that it slowed cars down a lot, but it also slowed me down a lot. i honestly don't recall any potholes or having to dodge anything on blvd of the allies. i was shocked that it was touched.

Ravenstahl was elected in 2009. He's up for reelection next year. When he announced that he wanted the city to borrow to fund this higher level of roadwork, his political opponents absolutely asserted that he was just doing it to win reelection (even if they weren't willing to say it was a bad idea).

Not sure about the Boulevard (though I remember @pgtraffic posting it would happen), but Murray and some other roads in Squirrel Hill and Regent Square are being repaved in anticipation of more Parkway work this summer.

in fact, that might be the reason for the Boulevard, too: they're doing a bunch of work on the Parkway downtown this year, too.

FWIW, there was a PAT detour notice for the downtown Blvd of the Allies paving work that indicated it was a rush job to get it done before the MS Walk last Sunday.
