BNY Mellon 525 William Penn Bike Parking

Anyone else park here? Do you happen to know when the limited access door will go live?

This has been around for a couple of years. I don't know anyone who parks there, or even who "owns/runs" it. it's pretty awesome though. Is there new evidence that there will be changes to the door system? Mostly that has seemed to be a work in progress since we first noticed the facility 2 years ago now.

Is this some kind of Star Wars door or something? What are we talking about? Sounds cool though.

@swalfoort I've been parking here for 2 years.

@lou Well, the gate already existed but was never closed or locked. They're in the process of adding a magnetic lock that can only be opened with a key fob.

and the reason I ask is because I don't work in the building and don't have the fancy magic key fob, and I'm too sheepish to ask anyone at the building :-)

I used to work in this building and this space was originally the smoker’s cage for the late shift employees to smoke cigarettes outside at night without the fear of being mugged. They banned smoking completely and then turned it into bicycle parking.

I just talked to the guys putting the new lock on the gate and he said it’s going to be employee only secure parking. The only way to open the gate is to use an employee ID badge with a microchip in it.

I’m guessing anyone who parked here today that does not have a key card is going to be pissed when they come back and the gate is locked.

You can get into this area from a door inside the lobby but building security will probably say something when you walk a bike thru the lobby.

@Greasefoot hah, I got lucky. today was the first day I decided not to park in the cage due to fear of being locked out. it would appear, however, there is a button to open the gate from the inside.

now to find a new spot... I would have said the Mellon Square garage but it is fenced off with the construction.

I guess I'm the only lucky one here. That parking is for BNY Mellon Employees (me) serving as the secure location for all of the Mellon campus buildings. We've had some problems with people stealing bikes from there, so the company added the secure gate.

@DM - I think the most secure downtown bike parking is in the portico of the parking garage on Smithfield, just north of Sixth. Only about 2 blocks from the BNYMellon building referenced above.

Don't take a chance on the Mellon garage. We'd had theft/vandalism problems there.

If you work in the other direction, there always seems to be space in the portico of the City County building as well (Grant Street Side - look for the statute of Caliguri.) I don't know anyone who parks there regularly, but it has lots of thru traffic, and bikes are visible without being in the way.

Thanks Sara, I'll check out those options! I'm in the Frick Building so the City COunty building is perpendicular from us across Grant. I'm just thankful for the time I had to use the BNYMellon building!

I think the city/county building portico has won my heart, although the racks themselves leave a lot to be desired. I also noticed a few three rivers racks around the corner on forbes but they aren't covered (not an issue for a day like today!)

@DM - I thought of you when I went to a meeting at the City County building this morning. At the time there were three bikes in one rack, one bike in the other. I suspected one might be yours. And yes, the racks leave something to be desired. But, they are covered and reasonably safe, me thinks....

Wonder how long before the Vespa at the Three Rivers rack gets ticketed for parking on the sidewalk? I think the fine for that is something like $70.
