This may not seem like a big deal to most on this board, especially if you live in the East End, but yesterday I spotted a
new bike rack located at the Carrick Burger King.
Yeah it's a crappy 'wave' rack, but it is installed in a parking lot spot and as far as I can tell they did this all on their own. Our South Hills bike/ped committee has been trying (unsuccessfully so far) to get funding to include racks along Brownsville road, but this one was put in by the business owner.
To give you some perspective on why this is such a big deal let me give you some background about Carrick. Not only does Carrick not have any bike lanes, it doesn't even have a single sharrow. To my knowledge I don't even know of a single 'share-the-road' sign out this way - no bike infrastructure out here whatsoever. None. And this is part of the city of Pittsburgh proper, it's not a suburb.
The community also has
zero bike racks within the whole neighborhood, other than an isolated wave rack that was put in at the high school when they added an addition twenty years ago.
Carrick has two grade schools, two shopping centers, three small distinctive business districts, and we have a Carnegie Library branch; not one bike rack among the bunch. So this one rack put in by a business owner is a very big deal.
