$500? Can I just wear some makeup? Interesting there can be a job for someone of a certain race in this day and age. Is that even legal?

Sure, they're casting for a role... it might be a commercial for a product geared towards older, active African Americans. Having worked with Mosser in the past, I have to say that working as a movie extra is some of the most boring and yet fascinating work there is.

Interesting that out of three qualifiers you noticed only one:
African American Male 60-75
So male vs female is ok, age 60-75 is also OK.

Good point. Just struck me odd with all the race stuff going on these days. Such a hot-button with the media, I guess it is having an effect on me. Thanks.

Maybe you should pay more attention to "all the race stuff going on these days" if you think suggesting you might put on blackface to land an acting job is even remotely acceptable. Don't worry, I'm sure you were "just kidding", right?

No, I could use the $500. Why kid? I have bills to play just like anyone else. I thought this was an acting job? Can't one show up in costume? Do actors in Hollywood make themselves bald, fat or whatever for parts? Wow. I guess I do have a different perspective. No idea why I am here other than cycling. Really I don't get people on this forum at all.

@gg I don't comment much here but are you saying this is really ok? Now I know the kind of man you are. No need to reply I wont be reading this post again. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface

He could just be a man that lacks the historical context for what he's proposing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface Speaking of certain jobs for certain races: http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/08/28/us-merrillynch-idUSBRE97R13X20130828 BofA's Merrill to settle racial bias suit for $160 million "Lead plaintiff George McReynolds, a black broker who has worked for Merrill Lynch for 30 years, sued his employer, saying it had a segregated workforce, including policies that steered black brokers into clerical positions and reassigned their accounts to white workers." Correct me if I'm wrong, but gg's said questionable stuff in the past right? Something about hoodies?

While I agree they would hardly cast a white cyclist in this role, the rules aren't so clear-cut. In 1993, Ted Danson got in trouble for appearing in blackface in a Friars Club roast sketch written by Whoopi Goldberg, yet when Robert Downey Jr appeared in blackface in Tropic Thunder in 2008, or Billy Crystal was in blackface for the 2012 Oscars, their careers weren't noticeably affected. And consider Otello, an opera whose lead, I believe, is still played in blackface, apparently without protest. I think it's a bit more complicated than "never acceptable".

No, it's that simple. Blackface is never acceptable. Period.

The Ted Danson example is telling. It's not complicated. It occurred in an entirely different era, when American society still had aspirations of progress toward equality. Call it post 9/11, post Bush, whatever you want to label it with. We have regressed in 20 years. Gays have made progress because apparently they are the only ones who refuse to be cowed.

Look, showing up at a casting call in makeup and expecting to be taken for a different race is absurd. It just would not work. @gg must know that. The only question is whether he made the comment in ignorance of its racist implications, or feigning ignorance to cover a racist attitude. I don't know the answer to that and I'd caution anyone from coming to a conclusion based on interactions on a message board. In any case, gg has been educated. So let's let the thing drop. We don't need to be parsing the use of blackface in performance indefinitely.
