City Database ?

I came across this and it seems like a really good idea for both BikePGH and the city. Not really sure that it needs to be restricted to iPhone app. http://phys.org/news/2012-10-app-tracks-riders-routes-city.html

I suspect the technology is not all that different from the transit app "tiramisu" that is available locally. It is a CMU creation, if I am not mistaken. In addition to telling me when the next bus will be at my location, it provides me the option to record a section of my ride, although I don't know that they are tracking route, or just the time, as they already know what bus I am on.

Almost every cyclist has smartphone. If you are not paranoid then you can easy provide data of your route.

BTW it would make bile counting much easier.

PS Endomondo to some degree has these routes recorded.

I thought it would be great to use the data from the yearly bike commuter challenge to feed in to a system like this. Great way to identify hot spots where peoples routes overlap.

Possible data bias. "Cyclists who own smart phones" go this way. "Cyclists who do not own smart phones", untracked.

I think there would still need to be manual counts to verify that we're getting all the data we need, not just all the data that's easy to collect.

I really don't think that most cyclists own smartphones. lots do, but I don't know about most.

Oh Stu... just because you still wire the operator to place a call on your rotary phone, doesn't mean that there is data bias! :p

Actually, I completely agree.

@Mihail it would make bile counting much easier.

I just KNOW there's a joke in there somewhere.

there's a rule out there--I forget its name, but it's related to Murphy's Law I'm sure--which states that an individual who points out or corrects the error of another will inevitably make a similar error themselves in the course of the post in question.

I say this, of course, merely simply to say it, not in any way to reference (and thus create) an example of its application, to be sure.
