http://bicycling.com/blogs/ramblingman/2012/10/09/a-few-tips-for-riding-in-city-traffic-safely/

Written by a former messenger, current domestic pro and maybe the best bike handler I've ever ridden with.

Thanks for passing that along...I had never thought about the "pass behind pedestrians" tip.

yup. always behind. mostly without alerting them so they continue in a predictable, forward moving path.

I think the last tip "take the lane" is one of the most glossed over. Being visible is probably the biggest part of being safe and taking the lane goes a very long way towards that.

Thanks for posting, really enjoyed this.

Riding in the center of the lane to avoid cars trying to slide by you is something I've been trying to get better at.

One of the tricker things for riders unacustomed to "taking the lane" is adjusting to the excessive hate from drivers. Close skims, honking horns, yelling & screaming.

But I say when life gives you the finger, give it two right back.

Hold your line & let them know you're not a timid lil bunny.

Also, you never really get used to it, you just become better at getting it done.
