Sooo, maybe the pair of cyclists who just about wrecked into one another while crossing 9th at Penn around 6:40 was what was left of CM? I was kinda hoping I'd see a swarm of 45 cyclists, since it was so nice.

Can I plead ignorance and ask what Critical Mass is supposed to be?

I rode all over Erie when I was in high school (Erie McDowell class of '96) and then got away from it when I went to college. I got on a bike for the first time in ten years last summer, and I've been a regular commuter since the fall (full-time since 12/2/09). I'm comfortable riding on the roads here, but I'm a complete newbie to the Pittsburgh bicycling scene.

What is Critical Mass in Pittsburgh supposed to be?

All I know of Critical Mass are the internet threads and youtube videos I've seen from the West Coast, where hundreds of people get together as a show of force and flout traffic rules. Drivers get pissed off, cyclists block intersections and run red lights, and pretty much everyone acts like a douchebag. I've been hesitant to join a Pittsburgh Critical Mass ride as a result.

How does it work here?

If it's a group of like-minded cyclists getting together to assert our rights on the road while generally following the rules, then I'd love to participate. If it's the sort of jackassery that seems to happen on the West Coast, though, I want no part; and it would seem to run counter to what Bike Pittsburgh is trying to accomplish in our city.

I see a lot of cyclists every day acting stupid (riding at night without lights, riding downtown on the sidewalks, cutting across an intersection at a red light, etc). Every one of those idiots makes biking in Pittsburgh a bit more dangerous for those of us who try to ride predictably and consistently. There exists a huge opportunity for the rest of us to set a standard for bicycling in the city.

Is Critical Mass the ride that tries to set the tone of what bicycling in Pittsburgh ought to be? If not, is anyone interested in helping to start something that is?

Critical mass in Pittsburgh is usually around 50-100 people (depending on the weather). It is generally made up of large percentage of college kids. The jackass level varies from month to month. Last night's ride was fairly well behaved.

The jackassery level correlates with temperature.

I think the jackass level more closely correlates with who is in the front. If the people int he front do dumb things, everyone else will do dumb things-- like ride through a red light and on both sides of car on Carson with two bikes cops on the other side of the street.
