Crush the Commonwealth 2016 - Heads up.....

Hey folks, just wanted to let you know that the Penn Relays are scheduled in Philadelphia for 28-30 April.... the same time as Crush the Commonwealth. What does this mean to you? Well, lack of hotels rooms. Same thing was going on last year and room rates in the city were sky high.....$300 plus. Also for anyone planning to finish on Sunday May 1, here in Pittsburgh that's the day of the marathon and the Point will be a mad house. This may even affect Sat night finishers a bit as they start prepping the area.

Thanks for the info about philly. I a still trying to figure out if I am doing it again. If I did, I would do everything I could to finish before dark on Saturday, but we all know how the weather goes. Last year was a fluke.

About marathon preparation (insider volunteer info :)) -- some preparations are going to be done on Saturday and even maybe on Friday. At least gates will be in place. As well as kiosks, etc. On Sunday volunteers (the first shift) are due to report at 04:30-05:00 to recieve t-shrts, instructions, etc. So the whole route is pretty much crowed starting this time. Around 06:00 police comes through and closes the whole route. It would be opened by 14:00. Earlier stages are going to opened earlier. Starting about 08:00 and until 13:00-14:00 there isalmost no accessl to the Point through BOA/Commonwealth Pl -- it's blocked with barriers, volontuers, race staff and police. There is some access from FDQ Blvd/Commonwealth. And I don't know about First/Commonwealth/Parking/Secret Tunnel. Idon't know about access through FDN and FP Bridges -- I never tried I never tried them (I volunteered for 4 years and had access to those areas since I had a volunteer t-shirt).

You're welcome Stef! I'm not doing it this year, but thought all that info needed to get out there, especially the hotel issues in Philly. Last year we had to get rooms in King of Prussia (20ish miles out of town). Not such a big deal as we started in Pgh and only needed a place to crash. With the start in Philly this year, that would be an early get-up to make it to the Liberty Bell at 0500.
