CSX Construction on South Side

Sloaps made a reference to tne CSX Project on the South Side in the EF Trail detour thread.....

The CSX project will "daylight" the railroad tunnel that runs from about 24th Street to the far side of Hot Metal Street for a brief period while they add less than two feet to the side of the tunnel to permit the taller, double stack trains to pass through the tunnel. The work will proceed relatively quickly, and the tunnel will be enclosed again, surface will be restored and landscaped, etc. An RFP for this work was on the street this summer. Work is slated to start 3rd Qtr of 2010 and be completed by the end of 2011.

One correction for Sloaps, however. The nearby Norfolk Southern line has not been running doublestacks "forever." Pennsylvania invested millions in the 1990's to help NS create a double stack clear line through PA in an east-west direction.

i'm not saying anything about Sloaps, but there are a lot of people for whom "since the 1990s" means "forever".
