Curry Mine/Yough Defense/Party against strip mine within 500ft of Yough bike tra

hey all.

I went to the Curry Mine public meeting earlier this year, and currently the proposed strip mine by the Yough is "on hold" so that, presumably, Amerikohl can get approval and start digging right next to Ohiopyle without us realizing it. I plan to go to this party with at least one co-worker, and I am sure we could arrange a carpool or epic bike trip.

Here's the details from the email:

This is almost embarassing to ask, but

um...

Does anyone want to do the bike trip as a 4 day round trip? 2 days in each direction?

If it were on a Saturday night I would totally make it a two day trip, riding down from Boston on Saturday and then back on Sunday. Otherwise, I can't take the time off of work. As it is, I'm going to try to get down there after work that Thursday. I'll have to see how schedules work out.

As I recall, the first request was not so much denied as it was not accepted. I'm sure there's some sort of legal thing but the upshot is that the application went back to Amerikohl so they could resubmit it at a later date.

There's more than that, something about zoning. I'm not at home so I can't dig through me emails to find the details.

yeah im not entirely sure... i think that the zoning part didnt go through, but you know how it is, they will keeep trying to reword their proposal until they get a yes. which hopefully they wont get.

Wow! Kudos to the folks who tirelessly fought for this. Looks like a good reason to top a 7 year old thread. “We are absolutely thrilled that after a nearly ten year battle we have succeeded in protecting this area of the Yough River gorge from strip mining,” stated Krissy Kasserman, Youghiogheny Riverkeeper. “This strip mine, nearly 600 acres as originally proposed, posed an immediate threat to water quality, drinking water supplies, recreation and the wild and remote nature of the gorge.” “This project was ill-conceived from the beginning—located less than a thousand feet from the Youghiogheny River and Great Allegheny Passage, surrounded on all sides by public lands and high quality waters, and in a section of the Yough River gorge used heavily for recreation,” continued Krissy Kasserman. “Protection of this area from mining represents a huge victory for our community and for the river.” http://www.mtwatershed.com/2016/04/19/we-won-special-exception-for-proposed-curry-mine-declared-moot/
