Dirty Dozen training rides

Anyone gearing up yet for DD 2010? I'm planning on heading out tomorrow (9.19) @ 8 am to hurt myself on the first 4 to 6 climbs on the map. If anyone is interested, post here - I'll swing by the Wash. Blvd. oval at 8.

Is Rialto open to traffic at all right now?

@quizbot. Got major rides the next 2 weekends but I'll join you starting the 2nd weekend in October.

@noah good question on Rialto. I think there's still a jersey barrier on 28, but I'll see what's up for sure with the rest of it tomorrow.

@88ms88 sounds good. I think the Wheelmen start DD rides around then as well but I haven't checked the calendar.

I'll see you guys from my living room window (overlooks elanor at arlington.)

@RF, Soooo....should we assume you'll be handing out musette bags filled with yummy bread? Or just throwing stale bagels at our spokes and laughing? ;-)

haha, depending on the day/time, I might set up a carbo-loading station outside, heh.

I don't know about the dirty dozen but I have been training for the dirtier dozen for months now.

Rialto is open.

Climbed Center/Guyasuta, Ravine, Berryhill, High/Seavey, Logan, and Rialto today. Between the potholes & high speed descending vehicles, Logan sucked. Terrible surface. I walked the last 100 feet of it, partly because I couldn't get a rhythm going due to the aforementioned, partly because I didn't have the legs. Seavey at the top of High is nice fresh tarmac. Berryhill is not particulary in good shape either... potholes & patches of slick moss. Ravine is ok, but man that hill is no joke.

On the top of mount Olympus there's a little metal box with a register/guestbook people sign their names in. I kindof feel like these hills oughtta have something similar.

Just got back last week from a ride from San Diego to Denver via Mt. Evans, Loveland, freemont, and independence passes. Lost thirty pounds but still might class as heaviest finisher of dirty dozen presuming I do...

See y'all on the hills- and perhaps join you for some training rides!

This seems like one of those things that... I'll talk about trying some day, but will always have excuses not to do. It'd take a LOT of chocolate ice-cream to lure me up Rialto (which was open this morning).

There's a hill near me that is nowhere near as long but easily as steep, Rosedale, which is on my daily commute. I can make it about a third of the way up now - cars slow down to watch me (they ignored me when I was still walking/pushing the bike up it). Pride hurts when I bonk with the audience, but I figure I'm still doing better than driving up it.

I'm from Ohio and want to ride the dirty dozen in 2010. Can anyone tell me the date, time and starting point? I'm guessing it's on 11/27 at 10:00 at the bicycle oval on Washington St. Is this correct, and what time should I be there to register? Do we register at the starting point?

I have seen some of the hills recently so I think I know what I'm getting into!

Thanks

no sprint thru the tubes? bummer.

saw a group of people riding up elanor from my living room window just now.

Every time I see people training for this, I feel incredibly lazy, haha.

The sprint through the tubes was the only part at which i didn't completely suck. *sigh*

Two DD2010 photos! These are on Suffolk.

About 10 minutes before the first riders, a deer crossed Suffolk.

I rode with the pack from the top of Burgess down Perrysville to Liberty/Penn & Commonwealth. There is a definite thrill to be enjoyed when riding with 100 other people! If I have the right equipment, I might try it, too.

Right now, the lowest ratios on my two main bikes are 40/34 and 40/27. I've made it up Negley and Federal, not to mention FedEx Drive several times, but the one DD training ride I went on in 2009, I barely made it up Guyasuta so bagged the whole idea.

I was finally home for this.

My cassette blew up after Canton which lead to some walking on some of remaining hills.

The 26 cog lost a pie shaped piece, leaving me with a 36-23 easy gear, not easy enough for my current fitness.

Gunnar Shogen rode it fixed, with something like a 45x22. Ouch.

Highlight of the day was Rick Sebak being there. He

has a new (weekly?) show coming out this Jan.

I am a huge fan of his and was stoked to see him

there.

oh awesome! if you get any more info on sebak's show, please post it, especially if it features cycling.

who won? i was in a wedding yesterday so i missed it. i saw some people who looked to be road marshals waiting at the bottom of rialto around 11:30am. i was hoping to see some people climb it as i drove by, but i didn't.

Eric: My cassette blew up

While it won't necessarily be reflective of the entire line, who manufactured your cassette?

ahlir

Steevo = winner

SRAM PG 850 12-26 8 speed. Haven't pulled it apart to see if there are clues to the cause of its demise. I've never seen a cheap cassette break like this.

eric

Eric: thanks. You must have some legs; the most I've managed to break is some teeth (on Shimano).

Steevo: Congrats!

when i tried the dd, i did the same thing to my cassette, going up berry hill. it survived all my training rides, but something started clinking at the bottom of that fateful hill, and while trying to fight through it, ripped a chunk out of the poor cassette. it was a reasonably good cassette. before i broke it, of course.
