Dirty Half Dozen Plus One Ride!

"The Dirty Half Dozen Plus One" ride is a go. Look for it on the calendar, and on Facebook. I will make a flyer at some point as well.

Saturday Aug. 13th Meet at the Bud Harris Cycling Oval at 11am. We'll roll out at 11:15. Ride covers the first seven hills of the Dirty Dozen From Center ave to Suffolk st. Ride will be roughly 25 miles.

We will ride between hills casually though in true Dirty Dozen style we'll blow the whistle at the start of the climbs and record the placement at the top. We'll wait to regroup and continue. There will be a mid ride food stop in Millvale as well.

There will be a follow vehicle driven by the lovely Becca to carry some snacks and spare tubes. (it is not a broom wagon so do not expect to be sagged!)

There are no prizes just pain.

Helmets and Brakes (both) Mandatory.

(low) Gears strongly encouraged. Do not bring a single speed unless you can actually keep up on it.

Ride at your own risk.

Anyone want to volunteer to drive a follow car for this event?

This ride is still going on. Be there!

"Do not bring a single speed unless you can actually keep up on it."

Duly noted. I think I'll sit this one out. haha...

That video was pretty good actually. :)

I'm tempted to rent a geared bike and ride this actually. Looks painful and ridiculous in that oh, so sweet way. :)

In summation: B-R-U-T-A-L

Most physically demanding thing I've done in my life that I can recall

Apparently that equates to lots of obnoxiously loud grunts and expletives as I discovered each additional bend and turn up a hill

I did it on my reserve commuter: Schwinn Caliente from the 80's with a double

Nice meeting you Ted, thanks for organizing and helping me tear some muscle cells

@Pierce...if you liked the discoveries, you'll really love the left onto Eleanor on hill 12. IMO, the single most demoralizing turn on the course.

I missed the festivities, but drove up Canton since I was over that way & thinking about you all. My sister, who's in town for the Antiques Roadshow, is impressed by Pgh's hills, staircase streets, etc., and I'd always wanted to show that one to her.

@reddan

I think it was Logan St that got me. I asked the #2 guy what the hill was like and he said it had a slight dog leg. So the first part looks about as long as Rialto, and once you get up there you find out you're not even half way up and then it keeps bending and bending and bending

Yeah, Logan's evil like that. Steeper near the top, too...always a crowd-pleaser.

Barry-Holt-Eleanor is just mean. Barry's a good tough climb (especially since one's legs at that point are usually, uh, not so fresh); Holt's pretty mellow, then you turn sharp left and see this hideous wall of asphalt. I think it's the hardest climb of the whole route, frankly.

fun fact, Gunnar Shogren rode a 45x22 fixed gear last year, and got 5th place on Barry/Holt/Eleanor. That's now the record for lowest gearing. I was really impressed. Here's a pic of him climbing Sycamore and you can see the gears for yourself:

Gunnar should be everyone's hero.

Well for doing the DD on a fixed gear he is

Matt recorded the placements for each hill on his phone.

1-Matt, Ian, pierce

2-Ted, matt, Ian

3-bill,Ian, Ted

4-Matt, Ted , pierce

5-ted, Matt, ian

6-bill, Ted, Matt

7-Ted, Matt, Ian

Given 3 points for 1st, 2 points for 2nd, and 1 point for 3rd.

Ted with 14 points

Matt with 13

Ian with 7

Bill with 6

and Pierce with 2

Darla ran away with the women's competition and was a huge trooper for braving the hills with us.

That ride was tons of fun. I hope to see everyone again at the proper DD!

Gunnar was racing bikes before they even invented derailleurs.

He's too fast to shift. The other gears would just get dropped.

Hey, nice meeting you all. I was on the aero-tubed Litespeed that everyone thought should be a Tri/TT bike. ;)

Here's the ride data on Strava.

It was fun to ride with you all. I was on the Mezzatesta.

Here's my ride breakdown:

1. Center-Guyasuta. I make it up without stopping. This is going to be hard.

2. Ravine-Sharps Hill. I stop three times. I am going to quit before #3. I figure Saxonburg is a nice downhill ride home, so I stay on before...

3. Berry Hill. i puke in my mouth a little. I make it up after two stops. I'm going to quit before #4, but I might as well ride with the group there, so we get to...

4. High-Seavey. Well, that wasn't too bad. Maybe I can keep going?

5. Logan. I stop three times. The last time was at the steep pitch 1/3 from the top. A guy comes out of his house to cheer me on. I gut it out to the top.

6. Rialto. Avoiding debris, I finish without dabbing. No way I'm bailing now.

7. Suffolk-Hazelton-Burgess. Ye gods, awful. I weave and tack my way up the hill in last place. It's been years since I rode this hill, and I forgot that Burgess is still pave. Barf.

Sweet finish at the end: half of us stop at Gus's for shaved ice.

Thanks for the ride, Ted. It was awesome to figure out who Pierce was just by the fact that he had a half-gallon of soy milk on his rack (as noted in another post). Awesome.

See you this fall for the real show.

I need to try at least one of these hills before the fall. Do you guys run 3 rings in the front or two? I am so scared that I am gonna fall over sideway trying.

stefb
2011-08-15 23:58:44

I think most people there had two, but I think somebody had a triple. I crashed into the brush on Logan, I think several people crashed on that hill and Berry

Stef,

The chances are if you do fall over you will be going so slow you won't be hurt and if you're in the dirty dozen proper you will either have the person next to you to break your fall or you'll be wearing extra leggings to protect your skin or both.

compact double (36x26 low gear) is my weapon of choice. Triples work but on super low gear the wheelie threat comes to play. I also think its harder to have balance, control and traction without some gear to stand on.
