Duquesne to WaterFront : May 2011 ?

Just received this link for the McKeesport Trail newsletter. From page 1, right column:

The Steel Valley Trail portion of the Great Allegheny Passage is expected to be open all the way to the Homestead Waterfront by May 2011. This section of trail features the Riverton Bridge that offers an excellent view of the Monongahela River, two new bridges over the railroad tracks at Port Perry and Whitaker, close passage to Kennywood Park's Phantom's Revenge roller coaster and a trail-side view of the Braddock Locks and Dam on the Monongahela River.

Seems like progress is coming!

I actually rode this on Sunday to see what was completed, what's not. It's a great trail and basically all completed (bridges are fenced off, but done) to Duquesne. You do get right up next to the Phantom, should be cool when it's running. Can't wait for it to "officially" open up. No reason you can't run the entire GAP from Homestead to D.C. (now it's just Sandcastle to be done).

From what I've seen, the trail and bridge at Whitaker is done, all they need to do is take down the fence. From what I've heard, the trail on the USS gass pipeline is done. What is yet to be finalized is the connection from the end of the gas pipeline, through the railyard and to the Port Perry flyover bridge. I don't know the progress on that.

I see no reason for that not to be done by May. I would expect it to be sooner than that. Just waiting for the official date to pull down the fences.
