Escape to the Lake: Whats the road surface like?

What is the road surface and conditions like on the BikeMS ride? I've currently got 34c commuting tires and am wanting to drop down to either 25s or 28s with a more race oriented pattern but Im worried about whether a 25 might be too small. I dont want to be spending half the day patching flats...

go with 28s, 25 would be fine if you're worried about speed but there are always some rough spots.

I've been riding 23mm flat protection tires year round bit for when there is snow accumulated. The high pressure narrow tires are efficient, but your stature and build might dictate 25 or greater for road shock or other factors. When I was 240 pounds I rode 28mm tires on the 'ole cross bike. At 205 I am fine on 23mm rims and also look to avoid cracks and potholes as much as possible. With good armored tires even tar and chip roads are rideable.

I meant that my rims are safe with 23mm tires.

Im 5'10'' 140lbs so theres not to much concern there.

I'm not familiar with the route, but I plan on riding the same size tires I use on a daily basis here: 23s.

It's better than most of the roads around Oakland.

You could ride 20s, though there'd be no point.
