So whats going to be so evil about this bike? or do I have to wait to see?
Evil Project Part I
Got my bike from Tim today, Really psyched about the whole thing. I learned a lot about bicycles today
http://fatguyorangebike.blogspot.com/2010/06/my-evil-project-part-1.html
I was going to repost the whole thing here but that was just way to much work
Well actually I titled it evil after I realized I left all the tools I needed with my nephew. it just seemed like a rather ominous start.
I dont really have any special plans. This is the first time I have done anything like this and it is more of a education. Learning how to build and repair the different parts of the bike. if I start with a completely bare frame then I have to work on every part of the bike in order to get it back in working condition.
I realized last night that I HAVE a bike sitting in our basement that is not fit for anybody to ride (it's too small for us as well as being a walmart special, I debate Freeride-ing it because I honestly don't want to burden them with the hassle of dealing with it) that would be perfect for taking apart and screwing around with AND I live like a mile from you. But I realized it probably after you already got your new part bike.
SO if you need a back up parts bike, or a second one, let me know, I've got just the thing. OTOH, if not, I'll swing by Freeride and see if they can at least use the scrap.
IDEA!
Take the bike from ejwme and weld it on top of the bike you already have!
Nick, a bike on top of a bike-on-a-bike? Tripple!!!!
Best take it to freeride, if it to small for you then it is way to tiny for me. I am after all a giant. 8-] (seriously) I'm pretty sure my leg weights more than some of the other riders I met, and they all seem surprised when they find out how much I love biking.
I'll freeride it, hopefully it will provide more than it will be a burden
Im sure that will be the case. I really need to get down to free ride to check things out. I keep hearing about it but just haven't made it down there.
oh, freeride is a magical place covered in bikes and parts and tools and lovely friendly people who will help you do just about anything to any bike you can imagine It's like Kraynick's, but with space to breath, less density.
I got my bike there. I've since done a lot to it, but the good, super cheap beginning was key - I wouldn't have started if it weren't for their initial encouraging nudge out the door.
well I got my tools off my nephew so today with part 2 of Evil project, hopefully I can get everything off the frame and start stripping it down.
finding that stripping the paint off is more difficult that I thought it would be, but still having fun
Are you using abrasion or a chemical stripper?
wire wheel on a drill. didnt want to use the chemicals (afraid of poisoning myself)
My thought was to use the wire wheel for most of it and sand paper for the little bits I couldnt get the wheel into.
If you don't want to poison yourself with a wire wheel, you better be wearing a respirator. Even with one of those white masks, I still got a bunch of paint crud all up in my sinuses when I did this.
yeah I had the whilte mask on doing it outside on a breezy second fllor balcony. it seems to work out ok. i got about 30% of the frame stripped clean today and hope to get more done tomorrow. the rain drove me back inside.
I have had ok experience with citrus strippers, but they take longer to work and still contain harmful chemicals that your lungs would appreciate a respirator for.
I would even recommend a respirator for your wire wheel method--if you don't believe me, work for a while with a white particle mask and then go blow your nose.
