Extension of 3 Rivers Heritage Trail

Just got news from "Friends of the Riverfront" that an extension of the 3 Rivers Heritage Trail will be extended up the Ohio River and will hit the Montour Trail.Didn't give any timeline of when this will occur?Does anyone have any info of when this will start and be completed??

FOR is partnering with Allegheny County and the Pennsylvania Environmental Council to put out an RPF this winter for a competent consultant. Currently we are still adding stakeholders to the planning committee who will help with the process. FOR is anticipating a design build plan since the route of the proposed trail connection is already known. Much of it will require improved on street facilities. Once the plan is complete we will work closely with our partners to secure funding before moving into implementation. The process may take several years for completion.

"Improved on street facilities"? This sounds more like bike lanes or sharrows that a separate trail. (Or perhaps this means a widened sidewalk, where there's no space for a separate trail?)

I'm hoping the consultant comes up with a way to build a proper trail like the other riverfront trails (and doesn't just take six months to propose painting a lot of sharrows).

"The process may take several years for completion."

It would be wonderful if it took a mere "several" years. This could be a wonderful addition though, well worth the wait.

even if F.O.R. could extend the trail up the Ohio River to Neville Island would be wonderful!! You can then safely cycle via Neville Island to the Groveton section of the Montour Trail. It's just as important, and as much a need,as to now finally getting to the Clairton section via the Mon River.
