Family Cargo Bike

My husband and I are considering selling one of our cars and getting a cargo bike instead. The bike would need to accommodate 2-3 kids and groceries. I'm not an experienced rider and I do not need to go far (5-10 miles max). Does anyone have experience using their bike as a minivan? Where can I go to try out different bikes? What is a realistic price point for such a venture?

OH BOY! You should try out one of those four wheeled cycles. I believe sun might make them.

There was a "Family Try a Bike" event scheduled for the Venture Outdoors Festival that got cancelled and I think was supposed to be put on by 412Flock & BikePgh Spinnsters. You might want to touch base with them. These guys do electric assist. http://www.adamsolarresources.com/adamsolarrides.html There are a lot of resources, check around. I'm not sure if any one shop has more knowledge specific to setting up a cargo bike like you are proposing.

Eric McKeegan (@eric on this board) did a writeup on family cargo biking for Bicycle Times magazine...might be worth checking their web site, or messaging him directly...

+1 for Thick Bikes. They have multiple different ones, including e-assist.
