...

Four people suffered minor injuries when a teen who had just passed his driver's test crashed into a state driver's license center in Bridgeville this afternoon, an Allegheny County emergency dispatch supervisor said.

The crash happened about 3:45 p.m. at the PennDOT photo and exam center at 1025 Washington Pike. Two people were taken to hospitals and two others declined medical treatment at the scene, the supervisor said.

It was unclear whether the new driver was among the wounded.

Dispatchers did not know how badly the building, which sits in a strip mall, was damaged.

Retroactive fail? Hopefully they didn't get a chance to put that stuff in the computer system yet.

To be fair, how many bike shop owners/workers have had customers crash in front of your place of business? All day everyday, right? Like the police pile up scene in Blues Brothers?

Test driving something for the first time is hardly the same as practicing for a year+ and taking a test.

LOVE that scene. Right up there with "He broke my watch!"

Wonder who pays for the damage.

said the dude was in his 30s

i like this part:

Both men were "shaken up quite a bit," he said. As for the driver, the sergeant added, "He just kept apologizing. He didn't mean to do it. Right now, we're ruling it an accident."

dude hit the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal.

Maybe the sun was in his eyes.

The building came out of nowhere.

It just suddenly swerved right out in front of him.

I HATE when that happens.

I know: The building didn't stop for a stop sign and crossed in front of him, so he was "entitled" to hit it.

I see the P-G article got updated again & says he did not pass the test (whew!).

When I took my driving test & got my first license umpteen years ago, they emphasized over and over again that driving is a privilege, not a right.

Maybe that's a Washington State thing?

Would it be any better if everyone had to do the test with a manual transmission? Sometimes I think that cars are too easy to operate [poorly or not]. The modern designs emphasize protecting what's inside the car rather than what the car may run into. Argh.

...while doing the hill-and-egg maneuver: Start on a hill with an egg placed behind a tire. Don't rev unnecessarily, don't stall, and don't break the egg.

Wow, he was really flying.

"Nothing more than a crash by an inexperienced driver"

"He was doing pretty good, up until he went through the building."

So which is it? How many other people pass just because they don't run into a building, but come close? This whole incident smells of inadequate testing, not in this case, but across the board.

You needed this crash to figure that out? Y'know, there must be a lot of job security in being a license examiner. I wonder how bad you'd have to screw up to lose your job. Maybe if you gave out licenses to people who didn't show up? Maybe not even then.

Maybe his flip-flop got stuck.

Regardless, they shouldn't have built that office right next to the road.

What did they expect?

Someone landed in the ditch across the street from my exurban Buffalo home one snowy night. Police assisted the tow truck. The take-away line I got from that incident was the cop telling the driver, "400 other people went past here tonight and didn't land in the ditch. What makes you so special?"

Maybe the building lost control and fell under the wheels of the car?

I don't see why they don't just take the driver's word for it.

Why doesn't that building stay on the trails?
