Critical mass imitators. We are not blocking traffic we are traffic.
Flock of Cycles Party Ride this Friday! (4/22)
For those not on FB:
The Party Ride is a monthly ride held on the second-to-last Friday of the month. The ride meets at Dippy in Oakland (4100 Forbes Ave.) at 5:30p with the intent to leave by 6p.
The group pedals through the city at a slow, welcoming pace appropriate for riders of all ages and capabilities. You get a chance to make new friends, learn new routes, and have fun on your bike!
Helmets and lights are MANDATORY.
Hope to see everyone!
Critical mass imitators
@edward m: I suspect you have never been on a Flock ride, as that is a wholly inaccurate statement.
Come out for one of the rides, before you judge.
"Imitators"
Wow.
edward m, start here.
Then read this one.
Those were the first two, in May and June. We've had several since then. I haven't blogged them all, but those first two should give a flavor of how the whole thing got started. Lots of pictures on links mentioned in the blogs.
There are maybe 300 regular posters on this board, maybe half of them have been on a Flock ride, maybe half of that have been on three or more; we don't keep attendance. But it does have a feel, a flavor, a cohesiveness, that differs from every CM ride I've ever been on.
This is *the* ride you want to bring newbies to, people who don't feel comfortable riding in traffic, and people who don't know their way around The Burgh.
Please come out and join us, and bring friends! Everyone is welcome.
If I come to the Flock of Cycles ride are yall gonna do anything stupid like stand in a intersection holding your bike up or obstruct traffic and give people roadrage? I am done riding with Critical Massholes. Pitt Police dont have to tell me twice I cant do that.
There is no guarantee that Flock will never give a driver road rage.
But the mission of Flock includes courteous, legal riding.
Edward, Flock Parties are far from a imitation of Critical Mass. Flock Parties are social rides. The only think we are out to prove is is riding is fun, and can be done in a large group while being perfectly legal and courteous to all road users (including orde).
I highly suggest you come to a ride!
Flock was born out of the sort of frustration you have with mass, edward. We've made it a point to follow all the rules of the road, there is no corking, no obstructing traffic, and lots of stopping at red lights and stop signs.
Like everyone above said, come on a ride
Flockofcycles.org for more info.
I'll be there in spirit.
ok i will just say it. in my opinion, critical mass is lame. I don't think it is productive to block roads and piss of other people on purpose.
I thought Critical Mass was super fun when i moved here and had never ridden with more than the 10 local bmx'ers from my hometown...But after a few, and corking, blocking lanes, yelling at cars etc..You then usually have to ride home alone...Think about it. The only thing that CM actually does or did accomplish was making ANYone on a bike look like an asshole (sorry for the language.) FOC rides are tons of fun.Sure, i'm not a big fan of helmets.Whole entire seperate discussion there, please don't call me out for it.But for one night a week we all get to ride, hang out, make new friends and have fun. As for anyone thinking FOC is like CM....Please do come on a ride! The only thing in common is that there are people on bikes.
I sadly have to miss this, since I work at 3am saturday instead of 4:30. Have fun!
Between work on lame weather, I'm not sure I'll be out for this one. If I get my tax refund I'm buying new cycling shoes, though, so I'll be pedaling in spirit! ... while sitting on a bench.. trying on shoes..
Can't make this one but looking forward to bigger Flocks now that the weather is nicer! (The last one I attended was freezing and consisted of 3 people. Still fun, though!)
I plan on being there, if I'm not something has come up.... meteor strike, alien abduction, work, something like that.
I kinda enjoy riding in the rain, at the very least its that much harder to get overheated.
I haven't melted, yet. Rain sounds good.
More and more I'm thinking it's time for a pair of rain pants.
Kept my jeans dry on the way in this morning.
My rain pants are bright yellow and now held together by silver duct tape in the rear.
Lots of use this month. Time for new ones.
God I hate this weather.
Due to the weather and other circumstance we're going to cancel the ride today.
Stay warm and ride safe!
No wonder no one was there. At least I didn't electrocute myself by bringing the stereo.
Crumbs, I almost went by anyway, for the heck of it, but decided to go check out the area under the Bloomfield bridge instead. On the way home I was moments ahead of a hit n run at Baum + Aiken. No one was hurt, thankfully. I was waiting to turn left from Aiken onto Center and heard the incredible crunching noise. Turned around to see a beige sedan with a taco'd hood speed away from the tank-like SUV it rear ended. Now I'm home feeling the flu coursing through my sinuses: yuck. It was great to be out for a while, though, even in the rain.
I ended up riding by myself anyway. Not sure I'll be able to do the next one, but will try.
