from moon twp

Hi,

My name is Mo and I just joined as a member. I have just started biking in Pittsburgh and would like to try out Bike to work Fridays. I live in Moon Twp and work in Fifth Ave Place. I am not looking to bike all the way from there to here yet, but would certainly like to know what my best options are for now.

I got the Bike pgh map and seems like I could come down Chateau Trail (along rt 65) to North Shore Trail. Does anyone know what my parking options are along that trail? What would be the best way for me? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

MoMoneyMoProbs.

This map claims that there's trail parking in front of the old penitentiary.

The trail up there is nice but unfortunately detoured somewhat messily through Manchester because of casino construction (or at least was last I rode it). I'd suggest giving it a dry run on a weekend before you make a work run unless your job is pretty permissive about hours.

There is a bit of parking, but not terribly much; room for perhaps 2-4 cars along the fence.

Bear in mind that the parking across the street from the pen is for the sewage treatment plant employees, at least as far as I know.

If you want to come in that far, there is a Port Authority Park and Ride lot on Beaver Avenue, right about where Route 65 meets Marshall Avenue. From there, the best route in would be to head east a few blocks, and use the Columbus Street Bridge to get to California Avenue (near the Post Office). Right/Straight on California a half mile, to a right on Brighton. At the Second light, left into the Park along what becomes East Ohio. Watch for right (downhill) on Scotland/Merchant. Take that. Follow curve to right, and come out near the Stadium. Straight ahead two blocks to the Pedestrian Bridge, then across that to Point State Park. You can find your way to Fifth Avenue Place from there....

Or, check out the bike marshall routes. Stu and I leave from alternate locations and travel the Route 65 corridor. You could park near me (Camp Horne Road area) and follow my route.... But, call/pm ahead, as my schedule can be a tad erratic. Stu rides regularly. There's also a ride marshall that leads an alternate route from the Beaver Avenue Park and Ride lot I referred to above.

Thank you for your replies. As alankhg suggested, I will try to make a dry run one of these days and then start on the biking path to work. My work schedule is flexible but I have early morning meeting tomorrow for which Id hate to be late.

Thank you very much again for the info. I hope to run into all or some of you one day to introduce myself in person :-)

I was wondering why Swalfoort was suggesting a different route, went down biking yesterday evening after work from Island Ave, couldnt go any further because of the casino construction site, turned around back to my car then drove to Montour trail for some biking.

I dont know if I will cause more pollution than Im supposed to if I have to drive 12 miles to get to a point where I could bike from instead of taking the bus after only a 2 mile drive all the way to downtown. I think it will defeat the purpose of bike to work fridays. Am I incorrect in saying this? Until I get into shape to bike all the way to downtown from Moon (probably 14 miles) and find a place I can shower at (as there are no showers for consultants where I work at), I prolly should stick to the Montour Trail in the evenings.

And, as one of the other discussions on the board was about racks on buses, there arent any on the 28K route :-(
