GAP bridge in McKeesport

From my not on a bicycle inspection tonight, it looks like the bridge from McKeesport to the trail paralleling 837 is open.

Anyone with local knowledge of the area? I'd like to confirm it is open to make sure it is possible to ride from McKeesport to Pittsburgh this weekend without going miles out of the way. The automobile bridge is closed this weekend, and from what I can tell the East Pittsburgh bridge is still closed.

Thanks!

There is a dedicated bike/ped bridge that connects the trails these days. From Duquesne to McKeesport.

I'll be riding it tomorrow morning. Let's hope it's open.

I rode over it a few weeks ago heading out camping. It makes the trip out to Mckeesport feel so much safer.

I rode across the new bike/ped bridge late last fall and the trail ended at Duquesne, I then had to ride 837 to West Mifflin. Has the trail been extended yet? or is there some alternitive? Route 837 is not very bike frendly.

I rode across the Riverton Bridge a few weeks ago. It was beautiful. That section of trail connects McKeesport to Duquesne. Duquesne to Pittsburgh... not so much. I rode 837, as I do a couple of times a year, and each time I do I start swearing sulfurously and vow to never, ever try it again.

Eventually I always forget how bad that stretch is and do it again. Later, rinse, repeat.

There is a designated bike-racked PAT bus that runs to McKeesport. And no, not actually the 61C (though if you find one with a bike rack you're in luck I guess).

The 56C McKeesport-Lincoln Place is a designated bike rack bus that travels via Second Ave and Hazelwood, crosses the Glenwood Bridge, follows Mifflin Rd., crosses the Mansfield bridge at Dravosburg and heads roughly east from there into McKeesport. I have the hand schedule out right now, looks like it runs roughly every half hour on weekdays and hourly on weekends. It's a bit confusing though because it goes the reverse direction on Lyle Blvd. through McKeesport that the 61C does. Classic PAT, compounding things that should be simple.

Either bus is a better plan to get to the GAP from town than currently riding on PA 837, at least I think for most people's tastes.

Note that the 56C is part of next month's schedule overhaul. On June 13th it becomes the 56 and gets a revised route and a new schedule. Looks like the new route will still work fine for getting bikes between McKeesport and downtown, though.

The 56C is a designated bike rack bus, like the 21A was. When they turned the 21A into the 21, the new schedule omitted the bike logo. I don't know if that means PAT is changing their bike route scheme, or if it was just an oversight.

To deal with the issue of useful buses going in both directions along Lysle, it might help to wait for a bus at the transit center, where they usually pull in and stop.
