I imagine untangling the bird's nest of crap that gets caught in your springs after every ride would get annoying real quick.

German WWI bikes - spring wheels
Ran into this today on the web... due to a rubber shortage during WWI, the Germans developed bike wheels with springs replacing the rubber.
Found another reference to them on page 8 of this .pdf
Anyone know anything else about this?

The pic in the PDF makes a lot more sense - springs between an inner rim and an outer rim.
Still, I'm guessing it would be pricey and hell on corners.
