Good 100mile ride

Yeah, planing and going out and doing a +100mile ride to say I did it. haha. And I am trying to figure out a semi-interesting mostly flat route (that isn't all yough river trail). Any ideas? Roads along the river would be good too.

*I have a couple 80mile rides under my belt and 2 dirty dozens. So I can handle hills...in moderation.

I've never ridden it but I believe other here have and I hear it is pretty flat. The Seagull Century and it is in October.

PMTCC has a flat metric century on their calendar for July 8. The route might give you some ideas or at least get you to 62.

@Andrew: Here's one I put helped put together for the PMTCC a few weeks back. A few extended climbs, but nothing terribly steep.

Oscar's Bike Rides Out Of Pittsburgh book has a whole bunch that are worthwhile, too.

Here's my suggestion: ride the new trail from the Waterfront to McKeesport, then stay on the road through Glassport and keep heading up the Mon river until you reach Fayette county/Route 201. From that point take some back roads over to the Yough River valley and ride the road and/or trail through the valley back to the Waterfront. You can break up the monotony of the trial by hitting a few nice road sections, e.g., West Newton to Sutersville.

@reddan If my memory served me correctly PMTCC was slightly modified -- we went 50->18->168 and it was about 96 miles (and about mile 63 my rear tire exploded but it was only 5 miles away from a bike shop where I've got two new tires :)).

Oscar Swan has a century that is essentially up one side of the Mon and down the other. I guess you go up to Monessen or about where I-70 crosses the Mon.

no idea of elevation (i've never ridden it, just heard about it), but a significant part of the mon valley century course is along the river. http://monvalleycentury.org/

organized ride is in august, but the map's on the site if you want to solo it.

^That's a great ride, and a great way to do 100 miles. You can find plenty of little food stores along the way. Bunola River Road between Elizabeth and Monongahela is one of the nicest roads in the region for bikes. Also, if you want some nice country road riding, get on Banning Road out of Dawson and take it back to Smithton. It's a good mix of farmland and a mining town or two that time has forgotten.

Perhaps this would be a cool century for a group to do at a modest pace?

@Andrew: I just rode this route on Sunday with a few people. It's a pretty good one...all of the climbing is front-loaded into the first 60 miles, so you can enjoy a nice mellow (mostly) flat ride back to town for the latter 40-ish miles. Nothing stupid-steep, just a few extended climbs.
