Idea: Charity Ride - 24hr saddle time for cancer research

I will preface this by saying that this is only in the idea stage. I have not done much research, and have merely been contemplating the idea.

My idea:

Charity bike ride, but with a bit of a twist, (or loop?). I want to do a 24-hour ride. The first thing that came to my mind was the Cathedral of Learning--Forbes, S. Bellefeild, Fifth, and Bigalow (loop). Initially I was thinking I'd do it as a solo ride, but after some more thinking (and talking with friends), I began to think relay teams would be fun, and could potentially bring a lot more participants.

Why:

Several people close to me have fought, or are fighting cancer. I feel that cancer research is something that will never have enough funding, so every little bit helps. Also, I want to do it on an open public road, because I think it would bring a lot of attention to the event, and at the same time help raise bicycle awareness.

Potential Issues (a few things that come to mind):

Insurance?

EMTs?

Work with a nonprofit to host it, or form one?

City permit? Pitt?

Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

All of this is just a rough idea I came up with a few days ago. I am not really sure where to go with it, so I figured the diverse group of people on here might have some ideas.

I look forward to your thoughts on this.

It might be just me, but it seems like a 24-hour ride would be quite likely to heighten one person's awareness of prostatic hypertrophy.

I'd be interested in participating, though I don't think I'd be up for doing it solo. For the safety of those solo participants, I think it should start at about 6 am Sunday.

Probably the easiest thing would be to work with an outfit that already does charity rides, because they would have relationships in place for insurance and logistics and such. I suggest the American Cancer Society 412-919-1100
