King Ted on the News?

I heard ted wrecked hard in Frick Park and was on the news... confirm or deny?

Ted did wreck but the news was a piece of sensationalized propaganda. As Ted quoted to the news reporter "this isn't news, go find a protest somewhere" and "do you cover every broken ankle like this!" He just got out of ankle surgery which went really well.

I'm sorry to hear this and I hope Ted heals up soon, without undue pain. I have a perfect picture in my mind of Ted dismissing the news reporter.

good lord, this was really a 'top story'???

If the news covered all my crashes I would of been the top story after every Tuesday group ride.

my 2-cents:

As sensationalistic as the newsteam was, I for-once was glad to see the portrayed EMS response to retrieve Ted. At least from the video shown, it didn't look like an easy task.

I also like the fact that this in-itself wasn't a negative article regarding cycling in the city, or news of a cyclist being hit & run by a car, but just -you know, shit can happen when you cycle, if it happens EMS will try to come & get you, and just be careful out there!

Hoping for a full & swift recovery -_-

This got sensationalized, in part, because the injuries could have beem so much worse. I think 6 paramedics having to hike down a hill to retrieve a person unable to extricate themselves SOUNDS like there are serious injuries, and therefore news. Instead, we all got relatively lucky (Ted being the worst off, of course.)

I think if the news outlets had known that the cyclist (Ted) was coherent the entire time, they might not have rushed out to capture the "breaking news....."

Hello all, I'm alive!

Surgery on my foot went about as well as possible. I got some extra metal inside now. We'll see how long I take to mend up.

The rescue personnel did an amazing job getting me out of there (on a holiday they no longer get paid overtime for I might add!) and the staff at the hospital have done a real bang-up job getting me mended up and all of that.

No thanks to the media vultures for blowing up what should have been a typical mountain biking crash into a media circus.

I did not fall down any hillside I simply lost rear wheel traction in a turn and went down with such force to wrench my foot around. I was wearing a helmet and would consider this perhaps the worst injury that could have happened in a fairly routine mtb fall. the kind many of you may have had.

Did I make an error, probably, am I a reckless or unskilled mountain biker. You be the judge. but this is the worst injury i've sustained in any biking let alone xc mountain biking which i've been doing steadily for the past six years.

Luckily i've just gotten decent insurance via pitt/upmc. I think healthcare is a human right but until that time when it can be assured us by our commonwealth. i recommend for you mountain bikers (everyone else too). Some kind of accident insurance. I don't even want to know how fucked I would be without it right now. Sometimes your luck runs out. you need to be prepared.

In conclusion, despite media scare stories about the dangers of riding, and There certainly are some, Riding is the core to which my wellbeing, psychically and physically, revolves. So I'l be back on wheels soon and hopefully ones that aren't side by side. Until then thanks for all the love and well wishes my dear bike community especially Becca and Greg for taking good care of me at the hospital.

PS- regardless of what we feel about honoring chris columbus. Pay our rescue personnel holiday pay for a damn federal holiday! Respect!

The way Kieth Jones told it, you were rescued like baby Jessica. Like a miracle.

How did you ever survive! ?

Heal up quick, Ted! No better time to get an injury than at the end of the nice weather. Hope it turns to crap soon so you don't miss anything.

My significant other (and dogs) saw you getting carried out...

@Ted, thanks for the recap. We all take on some level of risk everytime we strap on a helmet or take our first pedalstroke of the day. It doesn't matter if you are on the road or on a singletrack. Your number came up on 10.10.11 (is there any weird binary karma there?)Fortunately, it's an injury with a really good likelihood of full recovery, and as you say, you have the insurance to make less stressful on the financial side. Glad to hear you are doing well, and hope to hear that you're back on the trails again in no time. Best of luck in the healing process......!

Yikes. Did you break your ankle or foot? I work in orthopedics, so i get curious about people's injuries.. Like was it a bi or trimalleolar fractre? Tib-fib? Sorry, you don't have to answer that.

I am really glad you had insurance. People lose their homes over medical bills.

Glad to hear that you are ok. I do like the fact that you told reporters that they should cover real news like a protest. Cburch and i turned the news on after work and saw the "breaking news" and wondered if it was someone we knew. We didn't recognize the tattoos though. Speedy recovery!

stef, you woulda liked it. I'm told i broke everything i could in my ankle. i spun my foot 90 degrees. its fixed now. i got my doubts on rides for the next few months but my cow bell arm should be good.

thelivingted
2011-10-12 00:57:55

yeah may have had a trimalleolar fracture. if you had a dislocation and possibly disrupted your syndesmosis, there may be a screw across the end of your tib-fib that would need to come out in a few months, but maybe not. sorry for the medical jargon. anyway, you will have some badass scars and some radical looking X-rays though. make sure you ask to see the X-rays at your follow-up visit!

this is the closest example i could find to what i am talking about:

Is that whast you were doing in the meeting this morning?

swalfoort
2011-10-12 19:32:27

Glad you're OK, Ted. But I can't agree about the newsworthiness.

EMS's problems during Snowmageddon got a lot of coverage. When they've done a great job with a difficult rescue, as here, it's appropriate for the press to cover that too.

And I think that's the newsworthy aspect: not that a cyclist was injured (too common, sadly), but that EMS managed a difficult and unusual rescue.

Granted, the report could have been a little more focused on that aspect, and less sensationalistic. But stations have experimented with leaving out the hype. Result: viewership drops. Local news viewers will only watch the news program that tells them about the common household item that's killing your family but first here's Biff with sports.

@"Local news viewers will only watch the news program that tells them about the common household item that's killing your family but first here's Biff with sports."

Summary: People are a$$holes, some of them watch tv.
