large-wheeled unicycles

I am in the market for a unicycle with a wheel larger than 24". Locally, who has them? I've seen one on the Montour Trail, one in West View, one in North Park -- but I have little detail on fit, sizing, cost, availability, etc.

My plan is to use it for commuting, so I'm going to need to climb Fairhaven and Hookstown Grade Roads with it. The 36" wheel looks awesome, but if I have to push it up a 10% grade, there isn't much point in buying it.

Anyone know where I can at least borrow one for a while?

stu, do geared unicycles exist? I'd ask the jugglers at CMU (don't remember the name of the club, but if you know anybody who works/studies there, they should be able to tell you what day they all hang out on the quad throwing stuff and unicycling around). Might be able to find them snooping around on the CMU web site (it's a student group). If not, i'll bug my mom to see if she can dig up info on them for you.

My buddy Buck who used to post on here rides a 36 all the time. He did the MS150 last year and this year on it. I'll pass the info to him.

Yes, Virginia, there are geared unicycles

And I quote: "Warning: Geared hubs can be dangerous due to the high potential speed and the risk of unplanned dismounts during shifting." Unplanned dismount is such a nice, clinical way to phrase it...

oh that is so cool. personally I have barely enough balance to walk upright (biking is a pure miracle for me) and spent 30 frustrated and painful minutes on a unicycle once before I ran out of unlacerated skin to land on and gave up. but I'm all for such lovely toys for the more graceful among us.

They do exist, and could be yours if you happen to have buckets filled with money laying around. You can stick a schlumpf drive on one. It may be possible to hack up one of the internally geared "fixie" hubs to a uni, though I don't know if it could handle the forces as well as a schlumpf.

EDIT: Dan beat me to it, but if you do watch that video, there appears to be an unplanned dismount at the end.

I would try the Uni, but I don't want to have to buy all the new clothes;P
