Looks great. By that time I probably about on my deathbed, but nice to see something for the future generations.

How invested is U Pitt in this whole scheme? I find it difficult to believe that the Pitt has any interest whatsoever in a healthy Oakland, it would just make it a little more difficult to grab cheap property at will. And they're going to do whatever they feel like anyway.

Pardon me but I haven't ridden in days and I am at a -RED- cynicism level.

I like the suggestions for the neighborhood, but can we please get a little vision in this city and extend bike lines past the western edge of the focus area? Like, to downtown or something? I've never seen that considered. Did I miss something? I mean, come on, it's only another two miles!

It was discussed, in some detail, earlier in the process. The focus in this part is Oakland. Yes, there are plans for the Fifth-Forbes corridor between our two CBDs.

I'm off to work at the moment or I'd dig back through the threads, and/or MovePgh's site, for the relevant pieces.

Going forward: Be there, be informed, be open-minded, and be vocal. The more people who say out loud that we need safe biking between Downtown and Oakland, the more likely it will happen.

This really is huge. Getting people onboard with a plan like this is difficult. Congratulations to those involved.

So, sorry for the obliviousness, will do a little research after work.

If there is anything coming up where I should show up to show support for biking whether it be in this area, the corridor to downtown, squirrel hill, shadyside, ok, actually anything remotely close, let me know so I don't accidentally miss it!

Pitt should be very invested because it would help with recruiting students and their parents.

edmonds59 - the vice president of OPDC's board is the manager of leasing and support services at Pitt, and Pitt is explicitly listed as a partner on their website. Plus, as rsprake points out, a more pleasant Oakland is a huge recruiting advantage for them. Please downgrade cynicism level to orange for the time being (and get back on the bike!) :)

I feel it's necessary to say that we were at the table the entire duration of the planning process for Oakland 2025 and the BRT plan (the "Get There" link Ryan posted). Edit: And MOVEPGH although MOVE is still ongoing.

NYC Study Finds Protected Bicycle Lanes Boost Local Business

NYC DOT found that protected bikeways had a significant positive impact on local business strength. After the construction of a protected bicycle lane on 9th Avenue, local businesses saw a 49% increase in retail sales. In comparison, local businesses throughout Manhattan only saw a 3% increase in retail sales.

Awesome! Although, I expect I'll have moved on from Pittsburgh by the time any of that happens.

why would you leave when its just getting really good here? my wife and i could pretty much pick up and move to any major metropolitan area in the country large enough for to support hospitals and a small advertising industry but we choose to stay here because we love the city so much.

Thanks Brent, put the downtown meeting on November 7th in my calendar.

2012-11-01 22:51:03

@cburch I'm here for grad school, and I see that as a temporary thing. I don't feel like I fit in well in Pittsburgh. That said, I am still a big supporter of bike-pgh.

I'm hoping to end up in one of those blue states with good weather...
