Montrour Trail at Enlow Rd (I think)

So this weekend we tried again to ride the Montour trail with the inlaws and pulled in to what I believe was the parkinglot at Enlow rd and Cliff Mine rd, and it was all blocked off "for construction". Half the parkinglot was blocked off, cars filled the other half, and there was a Moon twp police cruiser sitting there not really moving towards shooing us but not exactly encouraging us to park. There were plastic jersey barriers blocking the trail west, and confused trail users at the eastern end, both sides had signs saying the trail was closed.

http://www.montourtrail.org/construction/index.asp says nothing about it that I can tell.

We continued on (via car) and "put in" at Imperial, near the ball fields, but when we drove home, I noticed the jersey barrier blocking the trail at the western end was gone and so was the cop - the signs saying it was all closed for construction were there, but people were ignoring them but still all looked confused.

Not sure what happened, but it looked like the trail was always open - the parking lot was what was "under construction" (not obvious what was going on other than inconveniencing trail users, but sure, "construction" on a Sunday), and it appeared that the trail was, in fact, open.

Not sure if anybody can clarify what the deal was or how long it will be going on, but such a busy trail would seem to merit some clarity, somewhere.

I hate needless mass confusion. We seem to perpetually inflict it upon ourselves as a species.

Sounds like you were at the Cliff Mine Road trailhead. There's been a notice up on the Montour Trail's home page about it for a while:

Construction alerts

Cliff Mine Road trailhead (trail mile 5.9) safety improvements are starting. The parking lot will be closed beginning April 18. A temporary trail will be available through the area, but you can't park there.

It's not on the Construction page, though, which only covers long-term projects. They've been working on the web site (parts of which had become years out of date), so maybe they'll add such notices to the Construction page too eventually.

ah, yes, sounds like the spot. At times I am lousy at googling, but I definitely saw signs saying the trail was closed... and people were parking there (only half the lot, the other half was car-free).

There are other spots to park where you should have no trouble. Go down behind Robinson Town Center to the light (where you are literally sitting on top of the trail while waiting for the light to turn). Turn right; there is a small spot right there, and a couple more a little ways down. The little pull-over opposite Hookstown Grade Road is a good choice. Crossing a bridge over the trail/creek and making a hard hook left just beyond will also get you to a good trailhead, with water fountain, but it's too well known and you might have difficulty finding parking on a nice weekend day.

IIRC, Hookstown Grade is at about Mile 4.

Wouldn't surprise me if the situation's changed since they added the notice to the web site, but if they really closed the trail with no reasonable detour, I'd expect to have seen a mention in the Yahoo group, at least.

I was on the trail Sunday and found that the Bethel Park spur was marked closed at the point where they're putting in the new bridge over Clifton Road. They've announced the new bridge in various places, but I hadn't seen anything about the Bethel Park spur trail being temporarily bisected as a result.

Naturally, people were ignoring the signs, checking out the construction site, and taking the opportunity to walk around on the closed Clifton Road. Maybe it's more closed during the week when the construction guys are working there.

But the Montour folks are sometimes better at building trail than at timely communication.

StuInMcCandless = Encyclopedia Cyclannica.

There is nothing he doesn't know about routes, directions, alternates, and all the minutia thereof. What an asset to the Board.

If I have to choose between having a trail built and being told about it, I pick the former, always.

Thank you Stu!

*blushes* Thanks for the accolades. It will be noted, though, that this is in the shadow of FedEx Ground's HQ, with which I have more than a little familiarity. There are still entire swaths of the South Hills that I know next to squat about. What I do know about is because I just got on a bike and rode there.
