Dan, I don't know why i didn't think of this earlier, but I can make you something.
I've had a brand new light for way too long with no handlebar space to mount it. I looked at a few different options online and I want to buy an "Issimo Nob" to mount the light off my stem (upside down). It looks like it will fit perfect. Anyone use one of these things before? Would it work for a 190g light? Any idea if a local shop keeps them in stock?
I use one of these to mount my Astrale-8 cyclo-computer to my aero bars. It does work, but it's not the most rigid thing in the world, and I wonder about the weight of the light.
I've seen a metal version of the same thing that had about a 4mm threaded hole in it if rigidity is a concern. Maybe you can track them down online, or I will.
I've used the plastic model for mounting a generator-driven light without any issues. Of course, that light didn't contain a battery....
It's fairly easy to make something similar (and stronger) with a bit of PVC pipe and a pipe clamp.

I was less interested in it, since it has a big useless block between the clamping bit and where you would mount a light. I want my light as close to the stem as possible, so I'm not nocking my knees into it as I climb a hill.

Yea, Nick was telling me about those the other night, which is why I started thinking about this. I don't want the light at my axle, but that is the next best option if the little nobs don't work out. I really don't want it on top of my stem.
If you can find a fork with brazeons for a front rack (like the LHT fork, just for example), you could mount your light midway up the fork using the Gino mounts screwed into the brazeon.
I've used the axle-level lights...even on a 406 wheel, they're vaguely usable (not great, though), but I agree that higher is better. Any way to rig something secure off the fork crown?
All I have is a fender on the fork crown. I wouldn't mind if I could find a decent mount that used that. I haven't seen anything for a clamp on style light though, only the generator ones.
I agree, a fork with extra brazeons would be cool, but buying a new fork just so I could mount a headlight seems like it would get me in a decent amount of trouble

that stem cap mount is a great idea... $28 plus shipping though... ugh
I can imagine some workable kludges...fork crown mount for a European-style light, with an M5 bolt through it into a Gino mount. Still a kludge, though.
I looked at some euro fork crown mounts. A few of them had two holes drilled horizontally, with a space between for the generator style light. I took apart the helmet mount my light came with, and it looks like it could work with one of those mounts. It is just shy of 15 mm wide. Using this would be much preferred over the really bulky handlebar mount the light came with.
Only problem is, it would have to extend far, since the light is long, and it would have to clear the cantilever brake. I figure at least 105 mm from the crown to holes.
Any suggestions where I could look for something like this locally?
I need something like the Busch & Müller Lumotec Cantilever mount bracket, but with a much longer arm..

Nothing directly useful, sorry to say. The mount I'm currently using may be sufficiently bendable, but, well, I'm currently using it...
I do have one of these ATOC Lo Beam mounts floating around, if you'd like to try it just to see if an axle-height mount works for you.
I'll skip the axle mounts for now. I'll take a look at the one you're using next time it and I meet. If it looks like it would work I have no problem buying one.
Topeak makes something called a BarXtender. I'm curious what you come up with - I'm also running out of handlebar real estate...
The Gino mount was the thing I was thinking of. One thing to bear in mind about fork crown mounts is that they're generally intended for generator-powered lights, and the extra weight of a battery may cause them to fatigue and break.

I had a couple of axle mount lights for a while. They made me look like a miniature locomotive with two smaller low side lights and one higher, brighter, center-mount one. They were pretty good for lighting the road surface four feet in front of me.
Unfortunately they both broke off in a matter of a few months. Probably just bad materials (styrene plastic, mainly). One sheared off while parking on a crowded bike rack, the other clipped a bus bike rack while taking it off the bus one day.
I'd break off my rather pricey light, and probably bend the crap out of my fork in a couple of weeks with an axle mounted light. The shadow from my wheel would get annoying too.
