Most bike shops should be able to box it up. They will probably combine a two boxes to make one long enough.

Moving- how to take my bike
So it's been a while since I've posted... My husbands job relocated us to phoenix. We kind of just packed our clothes up and left [a friend of ours is living in our house so we left all of our furniture for him]. Now that we've settled in it's time to get our bikes out here. We have a fixie and a schwinn that we'd like to just sell or donate [probly not very good for riding as they're both DS bikes, but they'd make good pieces for art or something]. Anyway, I can't sell my Yuba [http://yubaride.com/electric-cargo-bicycle] because I've just put to much damn work into it. I got a regular cargo bike and added the motor before they made the Elmundo. My dad know this guy who owns a moving company and they'll take it for a reasonable price... but it needs to be in a box. The bike is about as long as a tandem and the back is as wide as a bike with double baskets. Any ideas of where I can get a box that big.

Definitely go to a car dealership - cars have a lot of big parts, and they often get mailed in in cardboard boxes. You can get very large boxes in very strange sizes for free. Just ask and be nice.

Let us know how the cycling scene is in Phoenix! I know it isn't 115 degrees 24/7, any more than we have snow on the ground (in a normal winter) four months out of the year. There must be cyclists, how do they deal with it?

DS= department store, and my family is in pittsburgh so ill have them take em' to free ride. I also have a folding bike, real nice, that I bought for to ride to work and then lost that particular job. I'll make a new thread for that...
I just found some kind of "pod" moving system (just like the pods brand, but cheaper). We have a few other things we left behind so a pod fit my old bedroom set plus the yuba. I never thought to go to car dealership, thats such a good idea.
Biking in phoenix is awesome. Bike lanes everywhere... it's still a developing city so there's room for improvment, but where isnt there? There's also a lot of biking here, like average joes everywhere (not that we're not average). I'm still getting used to it but if it werent for my family being in pittsburgh, i might never come back! (well, maybe for a visit now and then).

We havent gotten too hot out here yet though, so it'll be interesting to see how they do it. They say their hot months are just like our cold months... stay inside and go from ac to ac (as opposed to heat to heat).

I've never seen a bike in Phoenix during the hot months... but then, I don't tend to get out of bed early and if you want to bike/jog/exercise outside in Phoenix during the summer, you have to get up early. I was living near 32nd and Camelback, but I assume there is a lot more activity around ASU and possibly elsewhere?
Any city that requires misters installed at the bars to make drinking outside tolerable at 1am is waaaayyyyyy too hot for me! But hey, at least you can buy beer and hard liquor at the grocery store!
