On your original route, you know you can pick up the bike trail at about 24th street instead of coming in all the way on Penn if you want.

Boazo yes I do know that, I thought about taking that as well. like I said i want to try all the different routes.

I prefer Smallman over Penn sometimes for a change of pace, or even Railroad St. I think Railroad stops at about where the trail starts. Watch the rail crossings, very shallow angle. I also had to deal with deep water (on RR at 24th) and mud along the trail by the Convention Ctr from a recent high river condition but that may be temporary. Just a matter of knowing how to get up into Point State Park at the right spot and get to the Ft Pitt Bridge.

Might try negley to baum, then baum to gold way, taking that to herron in polish hill, bombing down herron, left on liberty to 32nd, then over to either penn/smallman/railroad depending on your poison. I use Penn for days I want to get downtown fast, as the lights are pretty well timed for cycling speed, or down railroad on slower days where I want to sweat a bit less.

I would hop on the trail too, go down to the point by the river, and then take the ramp up to duquesne bridge sidewalk.

Also , before about 6:00am most of the lights on Butler Street are set to just flash yellow.

Gold way, polish hill-herron is on my list as well. All the routes that head down to the strip are highlighted on my map, i was thinking of routes that head toward the southside of town. being from Penn Hills I think of strip, eastliberty and the like. trying to think outside the box. see how far I can push the commute and still get to work on time (mostly)

Negley to Coral to Winebiddle to Liberty to 32nd to Penn is a decent route.

What Scott said. That was my exact route IN* to town when I lived in HP.

*there is a super secret special route OUT of town that bypasses a good 15 blocks of traffic and stop signs/lights

At Neville and 5th, turn right and head straight down into town.

Have discovered downside of new route. on the trail in the morning it is difficult to see the piles of dog doo. spent a good ten minutes trying to get it all out of my knobby front tire before bringing my bike inside at work this morning.

I am not amused

will have to do some thinking on this one since I really like the peace I get on the trail that early.

I think that problem might be related to the *strong* recommendations for bright lights.

Along with brightness, the height at which it's mounted makes a difference.

I've found that a light mounted low (e.g., on fork or even front axle) does a better job of highlighting such things. Rocks, piles of doodie, or other chunks-o-debris are easier to spot when they have a nice long sharp shadow trailing behind them.

I've never encountered dog crap on the trails.

im pretty sure I picked it up somewhere between east liberty and west carson(where I noticed it) only rode on streets other than trails and I cant really see a dog pooping on baum.. on the sidewalk of baum sure but not ON baum.

Add "water spigot" to the list of tools that would be helpful at bike racks. Also a drain.
