OT - GPS aided object recovery

My wife lost her iPhone yesterday. It has Find My iPhone enabled, so I was able to see that it was in South Oakland. Called 6 times, sent many messages asking for a call back. No response. Saw that it kept moving and started to get pissed. Decided to track it down.

Followed it around Ward and Dawson for about 20 mins, and it stopped at Frazier Playground. Walked over to some bleachers at the basketball court where there was a purse and a few phones... pinged the phone with a sound and heard it in the purse. 3 older high school guys and a girl were on the court, I asked whose purse it was and politely asked for my phone to be returned.

Fuck you whitey blah blah blah purse girl says, and hurls the basketball at me. Politely ask again, the girl's boyfriend eventually tells her to give it back. She gets it out of the purse & throws it across the court. Got it back & walked away.

GPS device tracking is cool. There must be a relatively cheap way to implement a device for bikes.

Ha Nick D and I both live right down the street from there. I just lost my DL when I was out running this morning in front of that park and someone found it and brought it back.

PS. Should have called the police.

Helmet cam was an after thought... I drove my car to find it as I didn't know how fast it may be moving. Could've recorded it with my phone, but I was just focused on the task at hand.

No cops. They would've interfered with my mission. I just wanted to get the phone back.

Sometimes I really hate kids. White, black, doesn't matter... they can be real jerk-offs. Glad the guy had more sense.

It's bad enough that she tried to keep it instead of turning it in, but to refuse to give it up when you're standing right there? *sigh*

Someday she will likely have kids. The kids will have her for a mom. Check your local headlines around 2032, if it takes that long.

That's actually kind of an awesome story. Perhaps since her peers identified and encouraged her to do something close to the right thing (in that moment), they can keep nudging her towards better decisions in the future (I know, ever the optimist). But in the end, you got your phone back, and that's awesome.

I used to worry about losing my cell phone. Mostly because it was old (2004), I really liked it and was used to it, and it had all my friends/family phone numbers in it, including people I kept meaning to call for years but never talked to. I had the phonebook backup thing, but was still nervous.

Then I lost it, and the particular backup feature I'd paid for "didn't work with any current model phones available, so sorry ma'am".

Cell phones have not had the same appeal since. Since then, I've ported my number to google voice. Similar function, $20 one time fee, no object to lose.
