park(ing) day 2013 ride- next Friday, Sept 20

This is coming up quickly - is anyone already planning a park(ing) day ride this year? If not, I'll try to put a route together - please let me know if you're interested. I had a lot of fun the last time I did the ride (I can't remember if it was 2011 or 2010 - maybe I did both?), and just took the day off to do it this year. https://www.facebook.com/ParkingDayPGH

I am very interested in a group ride through the Parks. Thanks for working the route, Salty.

I think I'm in--I took the day off work last year to ride around to the PARKing spots, and it was a lot of fun. I've been planning to do the same this year--just haven't formally taken next Friday off yet. If there's a group ride, all the better! Thanks, Salty!

I think I'm in, unless I volunteer at the Flock park. Is there going to be a Flock park?

I have the day off anyway, but (because) i have a big commitment most of the afternoon. however, i could do a ride either in the morning or after, i think, 4pm (which could lead into the Flock ride at 6?).

Nope, Flock isn't able to do a park this year, sadly. There will be a Flock ride that night, though! I will be working while all the fun is going on during the day, but this sounds awesome.

I'm up for this, depending on the time...have evening plans.

Yeah, IIRC they start tearing things down in the afternoon anyways, and I also have to be back at BkSq for the CyclingSavvy event - so as much as I hate mornings I have to admit earlier is better. There's still no map of the spots available but I guess I can get started on a rough draft based on past years. Dippy seems like as good a place as any to start?

The map is up! BikePGH will have a space downtown in front of the Carnegie Library on Smithfield St. We'll have the I <3 My Bike photo booth and a Wheel of Swag. It always makes my day when a group bikes to our PARK(ing) spot!

Ok, here's my first draft, which hits all the spots currently on the map in 13 miles (16 including getting back to Dippy). Please, if you have suggestions send them to me - this is my first time doing a cue sheet. I tried to stick to trails as much as possible to make it beginner friendly. route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3376322 spots: https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=217868967420177166740.0004e460cc63209d4d9f6&msa=0 Another goal I had was to get downtown early in the ride, so we could pick up people who didn't want to come to Oakland. However, as soon as I finished the map I realized the south side spots don't open until 11/noon - plus the last one, at yoga hive, is only open until 2... so I'll probably end up reversing the route. I also realize I might have to avoid some construction on Penn. The final map is supposed to be out tomorrow so there may be other changes as well.

Here's the updated route - I reversed it and slightly tweaked the routing. This hits all 20 spots in the city(*) starting at Dippy and ending at OTB. http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3381756 Let's meet at 10am at Dippy, if you need my cell number email/PM me. (*) there are 2 more spots in Midland and Gibsonia if someone is feeling adventurous.

A ride that magically ends at OTB - interesting how this always seems to work out. I'm in.

Gah. Had a lunch meeting scheduled by others for me. Parking day is out. I think I may have mentioned this before, work is sucking.

Well, I'll get to the Bike-Pgh spot, at least. My Toastmasters group meets in the Smithfield Street library at 7:15 and gets done at 8:30 when the library opens.

Hope it's not too late for the bookstore's space to be a part of this.

Big Idea? We can easily swing by there on the way from Oakland to Garfield - will you be set up by ~10:30?
salty
2013-09-19 17:37:12
probably not - we don't open til 11. We'll have board games, outdoor seating for coffee and tea drinkers, and a pile of free books, though!

I'm in!!! Warning: my brakes have been misbehaving, so I may bring along a sustained, irritating front wheel wail. Still, I can't wait!! (wanders off singing a tuneless "taking off work and riding my bike Friiiiday" song.)

It would be a shame to miss the Big Idea but I don't see a good solution ;( anyone have any ideas? We could always come back after OTB, I have to go to bksq anyways (insert plug for the cyclesavvy class at 6).

Joanne, we can loosen your front brake and marko can show you his "alternate braking method". You may want to bring shoulder pads though.

Oh I work right there! Yay!

@salty, I was accelerating not braking. Well until I hit the ground anyway. Joanne, do you need new pads or just an adjustment? We'll be going right past Kranik's.

10am at dippy. I'll be there!

@salty, I saw Marko's alternative dismount method--to reproduce it I'd need one of those snazzy orange safety flags that are the hot topic at city council lately. :) @Marko82, probably just an adjustment--I had my pads replaced a couple of months ago. These brakes seem to constantly shift out of place... @kitaira, yay!!!

I'm not sure if our space got put up. I set stuff out for the staffer on my way to work, but I was in the strip all day, and last I heard, there wasn't an empty parking space in front for us :(

Thank you very muchly for organizing this and leading the charge, @salty! It was so much fun--definitely an annual nice group of people on bikes/ANGOPOB tradition in the making!

Yes, thank you Salty and to everybody who rode. An excellent time. I'm going with the AGoNiPoBi acronym, possibly a future hashtag. (A Group of Nice People On Bikes)
