sweet! sorry for cross-posting, this looks awesome, I'm super bummed I'm missing out (but super duper happy it's happening, so I think it's still a win )

I changed the details for the ride and decided to go ahead and do the full ride, along with an additional rendevous downtown for those who can't make the whole thing.

~*NEW RIDE DETAILS*~

Ride begins: Oakland, at the Litchfield Towers, at the Flock of Cycles Parking Day spot. Meet starting at 10:30, ride departs at 11. Will leave some ride sheets at the parking spot in case anyone wants to ride to catch up.

Mid ride meetup: Market Square, downtown. Start meeting at 12, ride will leave by 12:30.

Ride End: Ride will end at REI in Station Square.

Ride Length: about 12 miles. Easy pace with very frequent stops.

@ejwme- bummed you're missing it this year too! thanks for making it happen last year.

Count me in to meet at noon. I can probably ride for an few hours before needing to get back to work.

thanks for bumping! I'm not really pissed though in case I came off that way. I just want people to be able to easily locate the thread with the relevant info for Friday's ride.

Also, I was thinking it seems like you should be able to hitch a tandem ride with someone who won't notice you're not peddling. Lyle, eh how 'bout it?

Oh this looks super fun! I am looking at a map - does the ride from Oakland go straight downtown, or go up through Shadyside/East Liberty then Lawrenceville which have all have a lot of spots to Downtown or do that after downtown? I only ask because I have 1.5 hours tops for a ride like this during the day and am trying to time manage a piece in.

@poboy this is the estimated route we're planning. It will take longer than 1.5 hours if you stick with the group, but you could probably do it if you pull off on your own after a while.

I'd love to do the ride as deadweight, but I've got meetings all day, if I ditch I wouldn't have a reason to gripe about my commute anymore - in a bad way.

But I like the tandem idea and I think I'll use it as leverage to suggest acquiring one

On Friday, September 16th, 2011Over The Bar (OTB) Bicycle Cafe will participate in National Park(ing) Day by transforming the parallel parking spaces in front of their cafe at 2518 East Carson Street into a Mini Mountain Bike Skills Park. The park will be interactive and fun with creative installations such as a skills park “skinny” (a narrow board to practice balancing skills) and interactive Bikerators (bicycle powered generators) from ZeroFossil.

Sweet. I am a 3 minute walk from OTB at work. Will check it out.

I misread this thread or something, missed the organized ride, so did my own ride, starting around 9:30ish at Tree Pittsburgh (on Penn at Graham, across from Quiet Storm), went down to Bike-Pgh's setup on Butler near 36th, headed inbound on Penn to Rothschild Doyno in the Strip, picked up popcorn and a seedling Norway spruce at Western PA Conservancy's table in a parking lot by Penn & 8th Street, test-sat a Chevy Volt just off Market Square, and finally checked out the AIA table on Smithfield by 7th Ave. At each one, I learned something, got something, explained the "Park"ing Day concept to other passersby, or engaged in some plain old job networking conversations. Took a bunch of pics, posted straight to Facebook. I'd do the rest of the city, but (happy to say!) there are just too many to do!

And a shout-out to quizbot, whom I ran into at Tree Pittsburgh's table. It's nice to connect a name and a face!

The AIA had a spot?!? This seems like something I probably should have known about. Ooops.

Chevy had a CAR parked on some astro-turf for their spot. Huh? I know erok got some pics & he was still laughing in South Side

I not only saw the car, not only sat in it, I got my picture taken while seated in it by some of the Chevy folks. I guess they liked the white shirt & tie I had on, or something. Sure it's a car, but all things considered, I could go for it. A few of us out here cannot be 100% car-free just yet, and have 12yo clunkers with 184K on the odometer, so I'd say they had perfect product placement.

stu, with all due respect, the point of Park(ing) Day is to envision other uses of parking spaces than parking a car in it.

sure, cars can be useful, but it's Park(ing) Day.

thanks everyone who came out to ride part way or all the way with the group. Sorry to anyone we missed connections with, but cool to see that lots of others were able to catch some spots on their own as well.

I'd have to say that Chevy does get an F for Parking Day. It's not about being environmentally friendly or having more "parks" at all. It's about exploring the possible uses for public space besides storing vehicles.

way to completely miss the point, chevrolet. WOW. i like how the front wheel drive caused the astroturf to bunch up

I think the Chevy thing is perfect, considering the target audience for the Volt is exactly "people who miss the point."

Sorry I couldn't make it this year, I did have a lot of fun last year too... 2012!
