Pittsburgh => Raccoon Creek

A bunch of friends and myself are riding out to Raccoon Creek State Park next week, and were wondering if y'all had any suggestions as to the best way. Google maps suggests Noblestown Road to the Panhandle Trail, to Rt. 18.

Is Noblestown Road a good road to bike on? Rt. 18? I've never been on the Panhandle Trail, but have ridden the extent of the Montour, and was considering taking the T to Library, hopping on the trail, and staying out of the way of cars the whole way. I might be totally over thinking this, and should just follow the Google directions.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Others here have more experience but I've ridden that route to the panhandle trail and I'd do it again - Noblestown is definitely a decent road to ride on. The West End Circle can be a bit intimidating if you haven't taken it before but it's really pretty tame.

Noblestown Rd is an excellent road. Everyone should ride that road once. I can't imagine 18 is great, but I'm not sure I've been on it.

Perhaps Montour to Potato Garden Rd (Oscar Swan three star!) Then just take one of the smaller roads around Lincoln Highway.

Doing the googlmaps thing, both routes seem to be about the same distance so it’s really what type of riding you prefer (road/trail). I think Noblestown is fine, but it’s a gradual hill so if you are loaded down with camping gear its something to consider. It’s been a long time since I’ve been on 18 so someone else will have to help ya with that part.

Noblestown is a fine road, to the Panhandle is good. But I'd try what Chris said^. 18 from Burgettstown to 22 is kind of sucky, just a high speed connector to get to 22. Fiddle around with back roads out there. Tar-and-pea-gravel season hasn't kicked into gear yet. Just keep an ear open for banjos.

Rte 18 isn't bad; it's kinda blah from Burgettstown until it crosses 22...long shallow climb, okay shoulders, but feels like a highway. After you cross 22, 18 is nice, as is 168 if you wish to hit the western side of Raccoon Creek.

+1 on Chris's suggestion of Potato Garden...that's a darn fun road.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Thankfully, we'll have the trip both ways to explore the different options!
